We are looking to move away from Sprint but aren't sure we want to get in another contract with a big cell phone company. If you use something other than the big 4 (sprint, verizon, att, t-mobile) and you pay monthly, who do you use and are you happy?

We've used republic wireless for the past two years. They aren't perfect- sometimes calls get dropped when you're switching from using wifi to a cell tower. It hasn't been a big deal for us though and the price is right. Overall we've been very happy with them.

Ting, family plan. Saving us hundreds of dollars every month. You can pick the network they operate on, I think either Sprint or Verizon, and choose your phone from many options, so I see no disadvantages compared with a major network. You do have to buy the phone out of pocket, or get a phone you currently have unlocked, so if you're a person who always needs the newest phone, you could end up spending a lot there.

I just switched to cricket. Expected it to be fine but of course our house is in a dead spot and I don't have a cricket branded phone so can't use WiFi calling. I will probably be switching back to tmobile
If you can afford to just buy a phone outright you don't have to be locked into a contract. This is my preference since then you have options -
Ting- huge savings, easy app interface, clear rates, and you can set alerts for usage.

We use Consumer Cellular - have used them for over a year and are happy with them.

We use Ting. They use the Sprint network, so we get the same exact service as Sprint users. Even at our highest levels of usage, we only end up paying about $80/month for the two of us. Still way cheaper than those big companies.

boost mobile, 35 bucks a month for everything. no complaints at all. use my phone for internet, calling, texting,etc.

We also are on Republic Wireless and have been for several years and are totally satisfied. We're paying a fraction of what we were on Verizon. I think our typical monthly bill is about $45 total for the two of us.

Ting, here. Even with tethering, I've never paid more that $70 a month for the two of us. Even with buying two new (nice) phones outright, we were paying less 12 months later, and we kept those phones for several years. The ONLY drawback is that you don't get data outside of a big city - so when I'm camping, I don't have service. That's literally the only downside. I'd recommend Ting to anyone.

Sounds like Ting and Republic Wireless are the big ones being used right now. @sarac: good info about not having service outside a big city. Isn't Ting on the Sprint network? @sauerkraut: @808love: @Mrs. High Heels do you expereince this, as well?

I did experience a loss of data when we were in Big Sur, but that's about as close to camping/reclusive as I got. They did have wi-fi at the lodge we stayed at, so I still had service as long as I was using their wi-fi! I try using wi-fi whenever possible anyway because you don't get charged data for using wi-fi.

Credo Mobile. Never had a problem and cheap. It funds progressive causes every month. Love that I pay for my phone and do some good at the same time.

Page plus! From what I hear it's similar to ting. Uses Verizon's services (satellites? System? Sorry don't know what it's called.. network? Haha) so no problems with dropped calls or out of network issues.
U have to buy ur own phone but there are cheeeaapp plans for little data. I used to be on the $12/no plan but now have upped it to $30 a month with more data. You can always have backup cash balance and also renew your plan early. Can always switch up your plan too so you're not stuck on anything.
We switched 4 years ago. It takes some time to learn the system but once you do it's a no brainer. I'd never go back to the big companies unless they make some drastic price changes

How's the data speed when not using WiFi on Ting, Consumer and Republic?

We've used Virgin Mobile for almost the last 10 years and it's worked great. I have a plan that gives unlimited data/text and 300 voice minutes. We don't talk a lot on the phone (does anyone?) so that works out well. Virgin runs off the Sprint towers I believe so sometimes coverage isn't great, but the data is fast even when there's only one or two bars. The biggest issue with it has been that there's no international coverage and no option to buy international coverage.
ETA: It's $75/month for two phones
