I have this brown eye shadow that I've been using on my eyebrows for lord knows how long. It is OLD. But I've barely even put a dent in it because I only use a small bit on my eyebrows. I never really know when to throw out make-up. Things like mascara, foundation, eye liner are easy since I normally run out of those things. But what about stuff that doesn't run out? Do you have a rule for throwing out make-up?

I hoarded old makeup(8 year old eyeshadows, etc) for the longest time until I read something about bacteria! I now replace my makeup more frequently....and it gives me excuse to shop!

Um, I pretty much throw things out when I use them up... even if that means keeping them a long time. I got married close to two years ago and most of my makeup is from then! I think you are supposed to throw out pretty much every type of makeup at the year mark, at most, so my answer is yes

I think if you use it daily it should be ok.. ? Dang. If makeup only lasts a year I need to throw everything out!

Umm...I have never run out of the items that I don't use very often (eyeshadow, blush, foundation), and I haven't thrown out the colors that I like. I've heard that you should change things out every few months or something, but if I did that, I would have to buy all new items every time I want to put on makeup!

@Andrea: I replace mascara every 2 months and foundation every 6 months. Everything else gets tossed around 1-2 yrs!

I do. I know I'm not supposed to. I have a friend that's a make-up artist and she's always 'reminding' me to discard regularly. But that's too expensive!

I replenish makeup that's run out every 2-3 months... and anything else I do a purge annually. I didn't used to... but then realized that I don't even touch the old stuff after a while, so I ended up doing a major purge one year and sticking to it

If it's not doing anything to me I usually keep it... but usually lip glosses and other liquidy things get gross after a year or so. I use a charcoal colored pencil for my eyebrows and I"ve had it forever, but since you sharpen it and get rid of the old layer I think I could use it forever

Anything liquid I will toss after about a year. Anything powder I just keep until it's gone. I think I've had a Mac eyeshadow for like 5 years and still use it! =\

I rarely use makeup, so if I tossed it every in 6 months or a year I would only have used it once or twice. I keep it until it gets hard and too gross to use.

I have this problem with blush, powder and eyeshadow since I only use a little bit every day. My rule is as long as it still smells fine then I keep it. I have two blushes, one for the winter and one for the summer and I've probably had them both for about 3-4 years. They're not even 1/2 way gone! And of course with eye shadow, if it isn't a neutral everday color it will last me a lifetime so I have a rule where I can't buy any non-neutrals until I use some of them up.

The key is remembering to clean your brushes once a week or so. I don't think the bacteria really becomes a problem if you're always using a clean brush!

I found this guide but I think it varies on where you read it...I've heard a good rule of thumb is anything liquid 6 months but powders can last a lot longer. I replace my mascarra once every 1-2 months because I remember in high school a science teacher showed us the little bugs that basically are living on your brush! Especially if you pump the brush in & out a lot. Yuck! I run out of mascarra quickly anyways.

hmmm. i have make up that i haven't used in ages. some around for like 10+ years hahaha. didn't know about bacteria. i guess i should start cleaning out the closet.

I don't use a lot of make up, so eyeshadow and foundation usually gets tossed out once a year.

I still use an eyeshadow palette from my wedding a little over two years ago. I don't use mascara much, so I haven't switched mine out in a long time. I tend to use my Benefit Dandelion blush until there's nothing left as well as my new foundation. I already bought a new foundation because I'm almost done with the first one.

This makes me feel guilty now! LOL I have tons of eye shadow I need to throw out. <sigh> guess what I will be doing tonight! Haha!
