Will he take one? It depends on that. My baby wants nothing to do with it! She much prefers sucking her hand and fingers. She is 4 months. With my older DD, she liked it so she used it until I took them away cold turkey at 1.

We do - LO will only take the Avent Soothie, no other kind! I understand concerns about having to wean them off a paci, but if they are thumbsuckers I think you would be facing a similar battle. LO is 11 months now and only wants the pacifier when she's tired or really upset. I don't plan on trying to wean her anytime soon, I think (hope?) either she will stop on her own when she is ready or when she moved up to the toddler room at school, or the pre-k room and sees nobody else has their paci anymore. We'll see!!

We use one with LO. I was very against them until I read that they actually reduce the risk of SIDS and then I was sold. LO also loves to suck so around two weeks we introduced one to her and it's been brilliant. We used it a lot in the first few months but starting around four months, she only got it when she was going down for a sleep. Now at ten months she can take it or leave it. We leave it in her cot and sometimes when she's going to sleep, she'll pop it in, other times, she can't be bothered.

I wish R would take one!

@littlepenguin: paci usage is said to reduce the risk of SIDS so that is one benefit. for my first DD, it was very handy in getting her to sleep so that was a plus. she never sucked her hands/fingers and loved the paci. if your son seems fine without one, i wouldn't introduce it now. for teething, there's a big variety of teethers that you can use instead.

We have used and loved the paci since LO was about a month old. I think there's such a thing as "responsible paci usage" aka don't let your kid have it for every waking minute. LO is a couple months shy of two. He gets a paci for sleep only, and gives it to me willingly as soon as he gets up. I would like to phase it out entirely soon, but he's such a good sleeper that I keep putting it off for fear of rocking the boat.

We use one occasionally. She isn't dependent on it but she likes it when we give it to her.

She's already trying to suck her thumb, and we would rather her use the paci since we can take away the paci but not her thumb.

My LO is 3.5 months and just started taking the pacifier two weeks ago. It's been a complete game changer for us - she went from multiple nightwakings with the longest stretch of sleep being only 5 hours to consistently sleeping 8-9 hours and only waking once a night to eat. She also started to nap in her crib! I already worry about weaning but she only gets it for sleep and it doesn't stay in her mouth the whole nap/night anyway (luckily she is not the type to cry every 10 minutes it falls out and need it inserted b/c I refuse to play that game!). For now, it's been amazing and I hope it will continue to help us through the dread 4 month sleep regression! I figure she'll be ok like this until at least 2 (and it's better then a thumb I can't remove from her to wean) so I've got a while before I have to REALLY think about weaning

we tried! LO would never take one. i think we had a period of a week or so where he was kinda into it, then he stopped.

DS is 7 months and we use one for naps or sleep if he needs soothing...sometimes for car rides or shopping if he is fussy but I will take it out of his mouth if he doesn't really "need" it because I want him to be able to drop it soon.
