I bought 2 reusable bags today
Gahhhhh I've avoided buying them in the past because I always forget to take them with me.

I keep them in the car with the cart cover so I can't forget them.

Yes. Our city recently passed a plastic bag ban, and paper bags cost 5 cents apiece. I think encouraging reusable bags is awesome!

We have quite a collection! We have 5 or 6 that we keep by the back door to go to the grocery store with us and I keep a couple of extras in each car when little errands come up.
Something that I didn't think about until recently is that you want to wash them out after you go grocery shopping because they can get pretty germy.
pomegranate / 3244 posts
Yup! I need to remember to keep one in the car for smaller errands though.
grapefruit / 4717 posts
Yup! Our city and most of the surrounding ones passed a plastic bag ban so stores aren't allowed to give out plastic bags. And if you need a bag, the stores must provide a recycled paper one and charge you 10 cents for it! I think that will jump to 25 cents at some point.

A lot of the stores near me don't provide bags anymore, so I almost always use the reusable ones. I always have at least one in my purse that folds up really small so I don't have to fork over the 10 cents for a paper bag, lol.
nectarine / 2886 posts
We have a few but I don't use them anymore because now I drive to the grocery. We use paper bags for recycling, and plastic bags for poopy diapers!
apricot / 274 posts
We used to be really good about using them, but ever since LO was born we forget to bring them about 75% of the time!

We acutally use the grocery tote bins now, I like them much better than the bags.
GOLD / pear / 1845 posts
always (I store them in the car), as well as tote bins like @prettylizy. I love how sturdy the bins are for heavier loads. I also have a cooler bag, which I use a lot. I just bought reusable produce bags, but I need to figure out a way to remember them!
persimmon / 1361 posts
Yup! I have one that rolls up that I can stick in my purse so I'll always have it. Sometimes everything doesn't fit, but at least for the small trips I don't have to waste a bag.
apricot / 274 posts
@prettylizy: @Mrs. Superhero: tell me more about these bins! I have never heard of them.
Even if we remember to put our bags in the car, we still have a 50/50 chance of forgetting to bring them into the store with us. I swear I used to have a good memory... It sounds like the bins would be harder to overlook!
apricot / 274 posts
@prettylizy: oh, those look like they hold so much! Are they not too heavy to move from the car to the house? Where did you get them?
pineapple / 12234 posts
Yep! I bought a few more today actually. I have 5 total but sometimes need more. I love the giant Trader Joe's totes!
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
I use them everytime. I usually need to take only four each time.
grapefruit / 4049 posts
I keep them in the car now. And after I unload groceries, I put the bags right by the front door so I remember to put them back in the car. I also have a big insulated tote from Amazon and I love using it to keep groceries cool. It holds a lot too!
apricot / 458 posts
@SAHM0811: we have the same strategy! We have about 8 bags in the trunk at any given time and I hang them on the door after so I remember to put them back
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
@Giraffe: They do hold quite a bit, but they're pretty common around here so the grocery packers spread the load out pretty evenly. They're sold at pretty much every grocery chain around here (Ontario) Sobeys, Real Canadian Superstore, Metro etc.

No. We like having extra plastic and paper bags around the house.
Plus reusable bags gross me out knowing that someone else's bags is coming near the food I'm buying. I don't know what gets on their bags once they leave the store.
bananas / 9899 posts
Nope, I am way too lazy lol. We keep all the plastic bags we get and use them overtime too. Maybe when I am a SAHM I will actually bother with reusable bags.
honeydew / 7091 posts
Yeah, I get a 5 cent credit for every reusable bag I use, which adds up to about $20/year. Every bit helps!
Plus, I'm one of those crazies that tries to do everything in one trip. It's so much easier with the reusable bags that hold more than the plastic bags.
honeydew / 7917 posts
Yes! I've only purchased 3 bags. The rest were free. I always remember to bring them to the grocery store but don't remember at other stores. If I buy something small, I'll usually ask for no bag.
pomegranate / 3314 posts
Almost always, as otherwise I feel really guilty. But, in the event that I forget them, I always make sure to reuse the plastic bags - whether for disposing of extra nasty poopy diapers or cleaning up dog poop from the yard. So, you know, all poop-related reasons pretty much.
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
I used to be good about using them, but not so much now. Plus, I always forget to bring them!
pomegranate / 3521 posts
I have a bunch of them but that is because I always buy them. I always forget to bring them with me

I've started using the Utility Totes from Thirty One...I have a large one and a medium one. Works great and I can throw them over my shoulder to bring them inside!
grapefruit / 4582 posts
Yes! In San Francisco plastic bags are banned and there is a 10 cent fee for paper bags. It got me in the habit of bringing bags with me everywhere. I like Baggu because they fold up and fit in my purse (great for light weight food items or clothes shopping)
watermelon / 14467 posts
For most trips, we use them. They hold so much more than a plastic bag goes and the handles are awesome. I've had the same bags for years. It's a pain in the butt to store so many plastic bags, but any plastic bags we get are used for cat litter and small trash cans.
pear / 1769 posts
Yes, for groceries. I don't bother at other stores and usually don't take a bag if I can easily carry the item(s) without it. Recycling the plastic is to annoying here, so we try to keep our collection of them to a minimum.
pomegranate / 3414 posts
No, I usually forget them at home. But since we use the plastic bags for dog waste/cat litter and donate them to a local mission that does a grocery give away they are in essence being re-used (if only once)

I have a bunch of them and would love to use them but I always forget to put them back in my car or bring them into the store with me. I need to develop a better system.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
Yes! At Aldi's you have to bring your own bags it's how they keep costs low.
I have a bunch of aldis bags, a whole foods cooler bag, a marshalls owl bag, MOPS bag, and a local coop bag. I love them and use them for so much more than groceries!
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
Yup, I use them. I have about 10 in my car. They are separated into two bags so I bring 5 bags into the store. When I bring them (filled with groceries) into the house, I unpack them and put them by the door so I remember to take them to the car the next morning.
If I ever forget, I do have that other set of 5 bags.
The one thing I need to do is put some bags in my husband's car. I always feel bad getting bags when use his car to go shopping.
We don't have a bag ban because we are in the suburbs but in the city of Seattle there is a bag ban.

I have the kind that snap into the carts and then you just pull them out and carry them to the car. I love them!
