We started time outs with DD when she was about 20/21 months, and they seem pretty effective. We haven't had to use timeouts much lately (she's currently 29 months), but we're not opposed to using them when needed.

DS is 19 months old now. We have been using time outs for the last few months for hitting, biting, etc. We tell him no once while naming the behavior (no hitting!) and then if he does it again we put him in time out. Lately I have been giving him a second warning that he will go in time out if he does it again, since he seems to get the concept more now. Usually a warning will do it. A time out for us is just setting him on the floor near us but without us giving him attention. It lasts for about a minute. We only go longer if he is still mad and pulls away or hits at us when we go to get him up. It works well at home and in public. Once I get him up I tell him why he was in time out and have him give me a hug. So far it has been pretty effective. He is just so stubborn and active and independent and he went through a really bad hitting and biting phase through the summer and I just didn't know what else to do. I will continue to use time outs as long as they are effective.

LO is 18 months and we have tried it a couple of times.

We've been using timeouts since 12 months old. Typically it was sit him down, walk away and return. We only use them for big stuff. But they Are very effective when we are out. We also put his toys in timeout if he can't play with them correctly (ie not throwing them).

One time we were leaving a restaurant and he as playing by the fountain. He didn't want to leave we did a count down (he's starting to count to 3) and when dad went to get him he smiled and ran the other way. That was a timeout. Everytime dad asked if he was ready to leave the answer was no and more timeout. He did eventually decide he was ready to leave and we went home.

Yes. It's the only thing he responds to! He's 3.5 and goes in 1-2 per week. Well, depending on the week. Sometimes it's once a day

@Mrs. Bee: Yeah 2's were okay for us, but the 3's were way worse! I remember thinking, what happened to my little angel? I had heard that saying before, but finally really understood it. It was tough, but she got a lot better closer to 4.
