Because I don't blog, writing reviews is one way I enjoy documenting my travel impressions. I also use it to find tips on rooms, locations and things to do. It is the easiest way I found to compare amenities as well. I realize this sounds like a commercial but I just wonder if anyone else uses it and a fan.

I'm a top contributor! Trip Advisor is so helpful when I'm planning excursions and figuring out new restaurants to try, so I write reviews as a way to give back. I love it when managers reply and take feedback to heart.

Yes! I love trip advisor reviews. I try to make a point to write reviews too and contribute since it helps me out so much.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I'm a top contributor as well. I don't think any managers have replied to me but then again I mainly write positive reviews because I am trying to remember the great places I have visited. As a somewhat selfish writer, I usually don't write about the less than great places, not wanting to spend much time mentally in my 'unhappy' place. As a viewer, I definitely appreciate the negative ones warning me away though. Does the system alert you when the managers write back?

I always look at Trip Advisor for hotel reviews. We just went somewhere last month and I spent like 3 days narrowing down my choices based on Trip Advisor reviews!

Yes - I love trip advisor and also use yelp. I started to use them a lot with traveling for work but still use them now with traveling less. I find the reviews and Q&As on trip advisor to be very helpful.

I would never book anything without looking up on tripadvisor first! It's my go to! I also love it when I get a helpful vote or when the facility replies back haha

@808love: yes, I get emails when someone replies to my review or finds it helpful.
Managers have responded to glowing reviews and ones where I have highlighted something I didn't like as much. I think it's important for companies to know why a customer may not visit again just as much to know why someone will return.

Yes! I don't travel often but when I do I always check TripAdvisor! It's a must and it's so helpful!
I always write reviews and I don't think I've written a bad one! (because all the places I've chosen have been picked from TripAdvisor).

@.twist.: Yes-when I am able to choose through Trip Advisor, I make better decisions and thus, more positive reviews. If anything constructive comes to my head while writing, I definitely throw it in to be more helpful.
I've always wondered if people who get accommodating replies from managers get freebies if they return to a place they originally roasted. I'm sure not always but I wonder how often.

Absolutely! I use it every time I travel. Although I have to say that I've been led astray on hotels on numerous occasions.

@808love: I've never had a totally awful review, but I manage an attraction that is often reviewed. Occasionally we get negative reviews (one out of ever 20-25.) If I think it's a legitimate concern (usually with one of my young employees...), I encourage them to contact us and I'll arrange for free stuff. If it's about how dirty the area is around our venue (it usually isn't, but after a festival next door, it is occasionally, and it has nothing to do with us), then I pretty much blow it off.

I read the reviews and post them.
I like to write positive and negative reviews. I also like it when companies gently remind me to review them so I will remember to do so.

Yes. Many of them are helpful. I've also written reviews. That said, I am also weary of looking at profiles since there have been claims of hotels paying individuals and companies to write reviews. I also like the destination forums as its helpful to know what travelers are thinking about asking about a specific place.

@BKCaribBaby: one of the hotels DH picked for us to stay was flagged for fake reviews. Mine was genuine and written before the site flagged the hotel. When I looked at the reviews though there were quite a few buyer beware about noise, so I wonder how they figured it out.

I love Trip Advisor and use it all the time even for things in my own town. I also get a total crackup over people who loooove a restaurant, "best meal ever" but score a two because the hostess had an attitude or the plate was too hot or something. It really gives you an idea of someone's personality.

No, because people who leave reviews often have either a terrible or excellent experience and that's not always indicative of the average experience. I go by word of mouth recommendations mostly. I've worked in hospitality so I'm well aware of how skewed reviews can be on these sites.
