Do you/Did you/Will you have a vegetable garden?

We had a garden a couple of years ago. We grew 3 different kinds of tomatoes (only one plant survived), jalapeños, cucumbers, yellow squash, and zucchini.

This year we are growing basil, thyme, rosemary, tomatoes, and jalapeños in containers. We don't have the space for a big garden anymore.

@SugarplumsMom: Honestly no idea - I grew them from potted plants I got at the garden centre. I will tell you I had the same thing this year with my zucchinis. They were doing great, I transplanted outside and BOOM all but 1 died.

I feel like seeds need such skill and finesse!

@babycanuck: I'm crossing my fingers for my spaghetti squash and pumpkin. I haven't even planted the pumpkin yet because they sprouted so fast last year.

I'm ultra babying them. I'm starting off with 30 mins a day in full sun for 3 days, then doing an hour a day for a few days before I transplant them out. Last year, I didn't harden my pumpkins off at all and they all died

My slumped over pepper perked up a little, but I'm dubbing myself a pepper killer until they're actually grown enough to be in their own pot.

So I went last night and got all of my plants!!

    - zucchini
    - bell peppers
    - cubanelle peppers
    - rosemary
    - cauliflower
    - english cucumber
    - another type of cuke
    - eggplant

@babycanuck: Exciting! We're already harvesting strawberries, peppers and green beans. Things are going slow this year...I think they're not getting as much sun as usual. We didn't have a hard freeze this year to kill back the trees and they're blocking a lot of my afternoon sun.

@BananaPancakes: Nice!! I bought a small strawberry plant but the birds keep eating the fruit...so annoying

@BananaPancakes: Nice! Our strawberries are just starting to grow, I'm looking forward to them

@babycanuck: I didn't get to eat any of our strawberries until I built a cage to protect them (mostly from squirrels)! Also, if you have enough sun, birds can be detracted by flash tape (shiny tape that flashes in the wind and scares them off).

I planted tomatoes and squash (zucchini and cucumbers) yesterday and carrots, peppers, walla walla onions, broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage today. I still want to plant more basil, cilantro, parsley, and more cucumbers.

In the backyard I have a 4x15ish spot and my Husband built a 4x6 raised beds for herbs for me last summer

Oh the previous tenant planted the best hood strawberries I've ever seen, they're huge and triplicate every summer, I also have a raspberry plant from the neighbor that is huge now!

Ugh, I'm so jealous!!! Going to plant the peas, lettuce, onions and potatoes this weekend, but have to wait 1-2 weeks for the bedding plants. It's going down to just above freezing tonight. Grrrr. Passing the time by hardening off my seedlings.

@sunny: We got some PVC pipe cut to the right lengths (for the base), connected it together with corner pieces, then made the rest of the cage with chicken wire. For just one plant, you might be able to find something already made at Home Depot?

We've now got microgreens, tomatoes, basil, celery, pineapples, and cilantro in various stages of growth. Everything but the celery and pineapples are from seed. I used the base of a celery stalk and the top of a pineapple for those plants. The pineapples already have fruit growing on them! Plus, they look good. I rather like having our door framed by actual pineapple plants. They're a sign of hospitality, right?

Unfortunately, we've also had our first casualties of the season. My tomato seedlings got fried by the sun (and maybe a little neglect...they have to be spritzed at least twice a day!), so I planted some new seeds this morning. I don't have a lot of options in terms of sun--it's somewhere between hot and blazing hot on my balcony most afternoons. I clearly have to be more vigilant about making sure they get enough water.

I'm also working on flowers. My husband has some amazing looking orchids that he's gotten huge blooms out of again and they've inspired me to make our container garden pretty as well as productive.

Yes! We do a garden every year...and by "we," I really mean my husband. This year we have cherry tomatoes, big boy tomatoes, romaine lettuce, brussel sprouts, cukes, and room for one more - either zucchini or summer squash. I haven't decided which I would prefer yet. Prob zucchini since my hubby's not a fan of squash. We babe some mint and (i think) rosemary as some ground covering near our lilac tree, but I plan to get a big terra cotta pot to plant all sorts of herbs in. Oh, and we have strawberries, too!!

I'm so jealous!! No planting till Memorial day around here.

Def planting a Asian variety of green beans, green onions and water spinach. We always do tomatoes, (a few different varieties), peppers (sweet & spicy), I want to try cukes again although they haven't done well in the past. Maybe blueberries bc LO is loving them! And watermelon again.

I love my garden!!! I can tomatoes and green beans. I previously have grown tomatoes from seeds but actually think I am just going to buy a few bushels from a farm stand this year. They are fairly finicky and don't all come ripe at the same time! I will def do green beans, jalapeños, other types of peppers, wildflowers and whatever other impulse buys I have when buying plants/seeds

So ladies! How are your gardens doing? I'll post some photos of mine soon...the zucchinis are running rampant! I also bought a meyer lemon tree and I'm super excited to get some fruit on it to make some yummy desserts.

Here are a few photos of our plants. We live in an apartment so we can't do much. We have tomatoes, jalapeño peppers, rosemary, basil, and thyme.

Our basil plant is huge. I really need to make some pesto or pizza with it. We have a ton of tomatoes on our plant, but none of them have turned red yet. We only have one pepper, but there are several new buds.

Here's an update on my tomatoes, sunchokes, chives, tuscan kale and Padron peppers. I didn't take a pic of the squash and pumpkin because they're still so small.

Our banana peppers are gigantic already!

I'll have to take a full garden shot but we have planted
    -Banana peppers
    -Bell peppers
    -Hot peppers
    -White corn
    -Yellow corn
    -Cherry tomatoes
    -Regular tomatoes
    -Cucumber
    -Squash
    -Zucchini
    -Watermelon

So far we've been able to bring in some banana peppers and some smaller bells. The squash and zucchini are growing nicely but aren't big enough to bring in yet.. I think the only thing that may not be doing so hot is the regular tomatoes, but we had trouble with them last year too

    papaya / 10473 posts

@MrsTiz: Have you grown corn and watermelon before this year? Do they take up a ton of space? I love both, but have been hesitant to plant them because I can't figure out how much space to earmark for them!

  28. MrsTiz

    cantaloupe / 6800 posts

@grizz: We haven't grown either at this house, but DH and his granddaddy have had a garden forever at his granddaddies house across town.. the corn is TALL but not too wide around, I think you plant it a foot apart and it will all end up touching.. so each corn stalk is roughly 1 foot wide either way but easily over 6' tall. Not much floor space.. we planted a LOT of it because you typically only get 1-2 off each plant.

Watermelon, we planted it 3' apart I believe and it's supposed to spread out and they'll all eventually be one big watermelon patch so it takes up quite a bit of space. DH has never done watermelon before so it's an experiment!

It rained 2.5" this weekend. I was away and I think they have doubled in size!

  33. Mrs.Someone

    pomelo / 5228 posts

@sunny: I usually plant them in mid-March or so, not really so fast! We usually have a good crop before 4th of July Last year June was too hot in Seattle so we didn't really get any...

24 July 2014 - I'm so pleased to discover that all the spaghetti squash I thought was growing are actually pumpkins! Woohoo! We're totally pumpkin/squash noobs and randomly planted them in a strip of raised flower beds by the carport. I mixed them up too, so all this time, I thought we had no pumpkins! DH had a bet with an ex-coworker on who can grow the biggest pumpkins and we thought we're out of the running!

I just started being able to pick some veggies!!! So far we've gotten a few cucumbers, a zucchini, and green beans. I love that DS calls everything a pickle. I have a feeling that we're going to be getting TONS of cucumbers. We also have so many tomatoes that need to ripen. I'm starting to see the beginnings of broccoli. Our pepper plants aren't doing anything. I don't think it's been hot enough this summer. I also think I need to rethink the location of my herb garden as it's not getting as much sun as it probably needs. All in all, I'm pretty happy with how my first year of gardening is turning out!

    @SugarplumsMom: Whoohoo! That's a nice surprise.

@MUI831: That's awesome. Sounds like you've got a green thumb

I've started harvesting baby potatoes, and I think I could take some onions if needed. The herbs are doing really well, my tomatoes are loaded, if still green. I also think I'm getting a ton of cucumbers. But, the dang rabbits have eaten most of my peas, the broccoli, cauliflower and even a pepper plant. Any one have any tips in keeping them out? I'm hoping to avoid having to build a fence.
