We compost food and yard scraps but it's not done in my yard. My waste management company dropped off a food waste bin and we pay for them to pick up our compost every week.

Since we are renting, I'm not sure if I will have to get approval to start an in yard compost. I'm actually a little glad that a local waste company picks up our compost.

If I owned a house, I would consider composting in my own yard.

Also in Seattle, so we do city-mandated composting. The rules are pretty different for backyard composting because the big municipal composters work super quickly to break down stuff you can't put in your backyard pile/barrel. I do remember seeing something like you're describing at a garden show once, but I'm not sure what it's called...sorry I can't be of more help.

We compost in a big plastic trash bin that the previous owners left in the yard (we drilled holes in it). We just till it occasionally with a little pitchfork we got from MIL. Sometimes getting the consistency is tough and we'll have to supplement with some fertilizer/soil to get it back to being wet/hot enough. I put the composted stuff in my raised beds when we till them under and get ready to replant. Then just start the compost pile again.

I looked into some of the rotating compost bins, but my option was free so it won out

We've got one of the black bins that is open on the bottom. We tore up the grass where the bin sits, so the compost has contact with the bare soil- apparently it's really critical to get the compost exposed to the bacteria that is in the ground already. Worms also crawl up into the compost and that helps a lot.

He treats the compost pile as a hobby of sorts (or rather, as a part of his general gardening hobby). We live in an area that gets really hot during the summer, and scraps don't last long in that environment! Even during spring and fall, you can feel the heat radiating off of the side of the bin! It's pretty cool.

Also, the neighbors send their kids over to put their scraps in the bin, and the 4 year old next door has been daring his friends to go up and peek inside "the zombie compost". Things can look a little gnarly when they're decomposing, apparently! It's become the cool new neighborhood game.

We compost! We have a geobin. I kinda chop it up only once a month or so...when it needs it. Really it seems so intimidating and then when you start it's like, the easiest thing. Just sorta look at it, see if stuff is moving along, does it smell good....if not, stir/chop!

BTW: geobin is only 28$!

In Portland I composted with worms in a plastic bin. Since we moved to Louisiana we composted with a tumbler which I think is the easiest option. But I felt like it attracted cockroaches so I stopped. My friend does it and says she doesn't have a problem though. I just don't take the chance.

My grandparents have the open pile like @looch: but my mom uses a bin. I plan on doing this at some point when I get a good garden going but not sure that will be this year.
