Do you have a garden? DH and I are planning our first vegetable garden this year! We are excited but clueless. We've started the prep-work and have been reading a lot. If you have/had a garden, what do you grow in it? Can you recommend any resources or give any tips?

@Bao: I wish my mom and dad lived closer! My dad has a scary plethora of organic gardening knowledge...Our whole yard was edible when I was a kid. I've found a lot of resources on Pinterest, but its not the same as having someone show me in person! I hope we don't just end up with a jacked up patch of yard

Nope because I can't grow/keep anything alive! =( I wish I could because I'd love an herb garden!

Basil is the only thing I've been really successful with. I buy my seedlings at the farmer's market too since I'm too lazy to start it from seed, but it's still cheaper than buying pesto!

Your best bet is to go to a local nursery and pick their brain for what grows well in your region.
Generally speaking tomatoes are usually fool proof!We had a veg garden at our last house and plan to start one at our new home this summer.

Tomatoes and string beans grow like weeds in our garden! Thats the only thing we've tried so far. We're going to try bell peppers and maybe zucchini this year.

Nope, but I would love to have one! We aren't allowed to dig so I don't think it would be worth it. I may start a little herb garden soon.

We do! I agree to go to your local nursery and ask what grows well in your area. Also, the Square Foot Gardening books are a good start.

I use to have a gorgeous little veggie garden and an herb garden at my old house. We don't have room where we are now, so we use a bed in my Mom's garden. I do have some peppers, and tomatoes in my flower beds. I'm going to try some potted basil and herbs too, they didn't work well last year.
We have great luck with zucchini, cucumbers, pumpkins, green beans, tomatoes, peppers, and corn.

@regberadaisy: I'm glad to hear because homegrown tomatoes are my main reasoning for wanting a garden! I'm obsessed with them! I would eat slices of them drizzled with balsamic and basil leaves for dinner all last summer.

@grizz: mm there's nothing quite like homegrown tomatoes. We're going to give heirloom tomatoes a try this year. You HAVE to try them if you've never had them. They look funky but man they are out of this world!

@regberadaisy: We definitely will! My coworker made me an heirloom tomato based ratatouille last year that was amazing.
