I don't really buy toys during the year for my girls. Even for their birthdays I stick to 2 items or so. But around the holidays, the deals are SO good!! I find it so hard to resist!!!
I think this year I might try "need, want, wear, read" to try and be better. With a few "stocking stuffers".

For DD her bday is in March so its a great time for me to shop for her bday.
Also if its a great deal I will buy it and save it for Easter baskets!
I try not to go overboard at Christmas because they get gifts from family members too and I don't want 500 new toys in my house

Tell me about these deals! I am not much of a shopper at ALL, so I am pretty clueless.
I think I am doing 1-2 presents and then making the rest. We usually try to make them all. Last year I literally knit her a giant panda. We don't do a lot of gifts, we tend to do experience things, so maybe 1 gift or 2, and then lots of experiences.

I've actually noticed that we do less around the holidays/bday and more just random gifts/toys throughout the year! DS' 3rd bday is in a few weeks and Christmas after that and we don't even have any ideas about what to get him!

DD's birthday is in March so it has been too long since I've bought her anything cool and I feel like I'm going to go overboard this year. Her grandparents are over-the-top with gifts and usually that stops me, but this year I kinda don't care about too many toys at Christmas.

I actually find it hard to find gift ideas! I only have one main gift idea for each LO at the moment. They are also always spoiled by their grandparents and other relatives, so it makes keeping gift giving to a minimum fairly easy knowing they will receive lots of other stuff.

J's birthday is 8 days before Christmas. It's a bit of a toy explosion towards the end of December.

Every year I have the best of intentions, I go in with a set budget, a list for each child/family member. My problem is I shop so early that then the "really" good deals come out and I'm like "well come on it's so cheap, I'm going to pick that up too" and it can quickly snowball! I'm really going to do my best to avoid that this year.

I am having a hard time with gifts of LO2. All of our baby toys and hand-me-down clothes are all in good condition. I don't know what to put on her wish list.

@mrsjyw: Ditto! We don't get much stuff for DS since he's usually gifted too much stuff during his birthday and Christmas that'll last him all year long (and then some)!! We rotate out and it works for us.

A little but since DS's bday is 3 days after Christmas, I'll be honest and admit that we do buy him new things throughout the year! It's just not realistic for us to never buy him new toys except for that 4 day span in December!

I find it hard to come up with enough ideas! Her birthday is a month before Christmas and everyone is always asking us for suggestions for both events and we don't even have ideas for what WE are going to get her. Kid is spoiled rotten and doesn't need anything. We even asked her what she wants Santa to bring her (she's almost 3) and she just asked for another baby doll.

My family generally does cash and my ILs like to buy a lot of *stuff*. Every now and then MIL comes up with a good idea but usually she ignores my wish list....

@Greentea: Amazon is a really great place to look. The Lightning deals have already started. Last week they had Hape toys all day long. I'm so bummed I missed the kitchen wares.

@Truth Bombs: Totally agree. I give any ideas I have to family so we don't end up with a bunch of crap. Which I know we will anyway. So I have NO clue what to get it. I feel like I am buying stuff just to buy it for her.
I asked her what she wanted Santa to bring her. She said a new doctor kit. Super already told my sister to get her that.

I grew up in a family where Christmas was a huge deal. Gift giving is totally one of my mom's love languages, and she still splurges out for us and the girls. Add that to the fact we don't really buy toys during the year, and I want to buy everything at the holidays! They have November and December birthdays, so I keep a list all year and then brainstorm to fill it out in the fall to watch for sales and hand out ideas when asked for them. I do check myself though. Christmas was smaller for DH, and it's one of the few things about which we have different expectations as to what's enough. Usually I'm the cheapskate

Not really because I know she has a ton of stuff already and then her birthday is 2 weeks later! So I have a hard time figuring out gifts that will be used when given so close together.

Kind of...my son's birthday and christmas are in the same month and we buy things for him year round according to his interests.
The hard thing with him is that he's not interested in experience gifts and he doesn't understand monetary gifts in terms of saving for the future.
