I'm in TX. My parents live in GA and my inlaws live in Louisiana. I do wish my family lived closer.

I'm only 3 hours away, so not too far. But last night everyone got together to plan a trip we're going on (my parents, my ILs, BIL, his wife, her dad.. etc) and they were all together laughing and I was on skype trying to hear It sucked. At least we can visit on weekends since 3 hours is not too far.

Yes! We just got back from a weeklong visit with my family in OH. My dh, lo, and I live in MA. I always get super sad and a little down after we get back to MA after being with my family. I miss them so much and they love LO so so so much, and it's so hard being far away. We try and visit each other every 3 months, but it's still difficult. I honestly would love to move back home, but my DH is set against it and grew up here, our jobs are here, and we are looking for a house here soon, so realistically I know he is right. But it is really hard being away from my family and I don't think he understands that.

@Katrocap: Yup. My family is in La and we are residing permanently in Charleston, SC. I get TONS of grief from them about it, and I feel so guilty that they are not a daily part of my daughter's life the way that my own grandparents were in mine, but I just do my best to send tons of photos, let her "talk" to them on the phone, and we all fly back and forth. It's not perfect, but it is what it is.

My husband's dream was to raise his family in SC. It's what I signed up for. And I have to remind myself every day that as much as I love my parents, I live for DH and LO now. And if DH has a dream, it's my dream and my aspiration as well, and we'll just have to make do. Our life is so much better than it would be if we lived in Podunkville, La. And that's what's best for my daughter, to live in a place with more life to live, with more opportunity and potential experiences. So I definitely have depressing days, especially when I first return home from visiting them with her and they call every day and are like "It's so quiet here! We want her back!" But life cannot be perfect. I have a wonderful DH, an amazing LO, and a beautiful setup. I wouldn't trade anything we have in order to change our living circumstances, and that's the bottom line. But I'm with you... It's still TOUGH on the day to day:(

Yep. We're in MD and our families are in AL. We don't want to move back, but it's always a far off possibility. Coming back from a visit with family always makes me sad.

Yup. We're in Northern California, DH's family is in Southern CA, my family is in MA and VA. It's hard without them near, but we see everyone many times a year and use Skype a lot.

We live in Alaska and my family lives in Texas. It makes me sad that E won't be able to play with his cousins like we were able to growing up.

My parents live two days of travel away... each way! But we got to see them last year and we're going to see them again this year... it's hard at times but they're happy where they are, and we feel lucky we can see them as much as we do!

We're in the PNW, my family is in NY, and DH's family is almost literally on the other side of the world from us. It's not easy now and I imagine it's going to get a whole lot harder once our LO is born, but there's not a lot we can do about it. We used to live about 4hours from my parents, but DH is so much happier with his job here (and there are very, very few positions out there for what he does), and I honestly like it here too. The only problem is the distance from family. It feels sort of selfish, but I just thank my lucky stars that we live in the age of technology like Skype and FaceTime. Even 5 or 10 years ago, it would have been even that much harder.

@Katrocap: yep, I totally understand! I am very close with my parents who live in Oregon and sister who lives in Texas. Like you, I live in MD. It stinks big time! Since my sister and I recently had babies, we do try to get together more often - we're all racking up the ff miles. Do you have an iPhone? We do FaceTime almost everyday - I find it easier than connecting via Skype. It is really hard though!

Yeah. I live in Switzerland and my folks live in Cuba. So far in 2013, I've seen them twice. It kinda sucks. When I DO go visit them, it's totally awesome. It's a PITA to get there though. But DH and I both grew up pretty alternatively. We moved to Cuba when I was 7 and everyone thought we were nuts. DH moved every few years. So, it's something we're used to. And I'm pretty sure neither of us would want a "normal" life. I haven't even been here 3 years and I'm itching to move already. (Even though now DH's parents live 2 doors down...)

Yes. We live in England and our families are in Missouri.

yup! we live in NZ. my mama lives a 7 hour drive away, my dad lives in Sydney, and DHs family live in CO. the only family we have is my sister who lives with us. it's hard, especially on DH, since we only see his family once every few years. I still manage to see my mama every few months at least

My family is in NC, LA, and, CA. We live in MA. I haven't seen one of my sisters since last July, when P was 8 weeks old. We have no travel money in our budget right now, so everyone has to come to us. It's really hard having them so far away. DH's parents are 20 minutes away and maybe see P once a month.

It's not too far, but we live in Louisville, my parents are 45 minutes away, and my inlaws are about five hours away. I was super close with my extended family growing up (we all lived within two hours of each other), so it's hard being 12-15 hours away and seeing the pictures from their frequent get-togethers. My husband's entire extended family lives in the same county, so we see them when we visit, but that's still just a few times a year because of work and the drive.

We live in PA and my family lives in Chicago. DH's family lives about 100 miles away so its nice they are sorta close. I really wish I lived closer to family but I don't think DH could live far from his family. I have to remind DH this when he complains how much airline tickets are!!

That's difficult! DH family live in Florida and that's where we're from. Just moved to Pa last year and were moving back:( my dad lives here which makes moving back more difficult. Keep trying to convince him that the beach is better then mountains lol. Maybe LO will change his mind;)
