I put pressure on myself to only use family names for our children. There are so many names that I love, but that tend to get bumped by family names (that I also love). It also doesn't help that LOs name is exactly the same as DH's great-grandmother, so I feel like I've set a precedent. Does anyone else do this?
(FWIW, our families do not care at all whether we use family names or not. Well, one person does but we tend to ignore that.)

Aww don't pressure yourself, especially if no one really expects you to! Using a family name is not the only way to honor or remember other family members. If you really feel like you should, maybe use them as middle names instead?

I broke the cycle, lol. In my family, you're supposed to do grandparent names for the kids. I am named for my paternal grandmother and my 2 brothers are named for our paternal then maternal grandfathers (they don't share the same name, 1st brother named for paternal, second brother named for maternal).
It means that there are lots of people with the same name and it's caused trouble for my brother, so I am surprised he's repeated the tradition with his son (named for our father).
I thought my dad would be upset I didn't name my son after him, but he's surprisingly cool with it and doesn't love my son any less...they're obsessed with each other, lol.

Nope, I like using family names for middle names. LO has the traditional family middle name for the first girl born and I would have it no other way. LO #2 will most likely have DH's brother's name for a middls name, whether it be a girl or boy.

I really wanted to use family names for middle names because I have one and I like the idea... DH did not (he also has a family middle name) because he wanted our kids to have their own identities. In the end, we did not use a family name, but DD's MN starts with the same letter as DH's first name. That was just a coincidence, but I like it, so I think we will do the same (with my initial) for our next kid.

My parents did not give me a family name. My mom & her siblings all had family names. But my Dad and his siblings didn't. I feel no pressure to use a family name at all. But I can definitely see how someone might feel pressured to continue a family tradition!
