Our pediatrician said that we can do this, but I want to look into it more first. Do you do this? And why?

Yep. We have since about 4 months old. It definitely helps. As our pediatrician says, it makes loose things solid and hard things soft.

I don't, but I've heard good things about baby gaia (I think that's what it is). I take a probiotic daily...no idea if that does anything for LO though!

I don't really know what it means to give a LO a probiotic...is it like Yakult(yum)or a medicine(boo)?

@autumnlove: She was talking about giving either the liquid or capsule form. She said that we can pull apart the capsule and mix the powder in with food/drink. Same with the liquid.

We do. It's a powder that goes right into her bottle. If you EBF, the powder can be mixed with a little breastmilk and then given to the baby. Our peditrician recommended it.

I dont know much about probiotics. arent there naturally occuring live cultures in yogurt?
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
@Andrea: hehhehhee...I was hoping it was Yakult but the powder makes more sense!

We did from the time LO was about 6 weeks old. She'd been having painful gas and would get so upset after feeding and take absolute ages to burp! We spoke with a midwife about gas drops but she suggested probiotics instead as they treat the cause rather than the symptoms. It came in powder form and we added a bit to some expressed breastmilk every day and sure enough, her tummy issues disappeared overnight.
We finished our supply just before we left on holiday so LO has been off them for a few weeks now. Her gas issues haven't returned (she's nearly 6 months now) but we just started solids last week and she became massively backed up. I think we're going to reinstate the probiotics in the hopes that it will keep her regular as her body adjusts to solids. We'll see how it goes.
As for treating gas though - I give probiotics two thumbs up! Only downside, it makes LO's bowel movements much stinkier than if they were solely from breastmilk...but the smell has nothing on the stink that comes with introducing solids!

Yes. We do because he has had digestion problems and I swear the probiotics in formula were the only things that worked.

I was unable to find a dairy AND soy free one for kids so until P was ready for solids we didn't. Now she has some coconut milk yogurt daily & I've totally been able to tell a difference! Probiotics are wonderful for good digestion & a strong immune system!

@pelikila: @yoursilverlining: @brownie: @Ree723: which probiotic to do you use and do you buy in bulk from somewhere?
pomegranate / 3008 posts
@Andrea: Florastor because it is one of the few probiotic powerders that can be added to a hot liquid (think warmed bottle) without killing the yeast. It comes in a kids version but the adult capsule version is the exact same (according to our pediatrician) and is cheaper and more readily available. The capsules are really easy to get apart too. We found regular Florastor at our grocery store and at certain drug stores. The Florastor Kids we only found online without really having to go out of our way so we bought it on drugstore.com and then switched to the capsules since it was easier anyway.

@pelikila: great! I was looking at the Kids version online and it seems pricey so I was wondering if I could just give the adult version and you just answered my question. Thanks!

Our Naturopath put us both on probiotics after we found out LO had MSPI. It's been awesome. We use HMF Natogen powder. Before she started solids I would just wet my pinky, stick it in the bottle and then put my finger in her mouth, she would sort of suck the powder off my finger. Now that she is older I just mix it in with something she is going to eat. Her tummy issues have greatly resolved, and she has not been sick yet this icky cold season.

we used to give charlie probiotics everyday until we ran out. the company discontinued it so i've been looking for a brand (my nutritionist friend sent me those probiotics). i bought some florastor for kids, but it's really expensive because it's in individual packets and only lasts like a week?
you should look for either of these two strains:
Lactobacillus
Bifidobacterium
i've read that culterelle for kids is good but i need to do more research.

@Andrea: We use Country Life Maxi Baby-dophilus brand. It’s a powder and we found it at a local apothecary/pharmacy (sort of a specialty shop, I don’t know if it would be available at a regular CVS type pharm), and it looks like it’s available online too. It needs to be kept refrigerated so I am more comfortable buying it in person than ordering it online. It’s about $18/bottle which lasts a couple of months.
We give LO 1/8 tsp. 2x a day and it did seem to really help her tummy issues when she was little. She doesn’t seem to get as sick as many daycare kids; she’s been going to daycare since she was 12 weeks and she is almost 7 months now and has had 1 ear infection and 2 minor colds; so I like to think its helping her general health as well (?)

@pelikila: with Florastor, do you just empty the whole 250 mg capsule or do you only use half of it?
pomegranate / 3008 posts
@Crumbs: I do the whole capsule. One capsule is equivalent to one powder packet.
According to my pediatrician and according to Florastor's website: One Florastor capsule and one FlorastorKids powder packet contain the same amount of active ingredient, 250 mg of Saccharomyces boulardii lyo, and are interchangeable.

We do the baby gaia one occasionally now. It was helpful during colic. I recently got baby cereal with DHA and another probiotic. I'm convinced that he got my weak stomach, so it definitely helps.

We give her one daily because she has had major constipation issues since she was itty bitty. They've helped a ton.... she used to cry each time she poo'd and it was traumatic for all of us, now there are no issues.
We give her these http://www.culturelle.com/your_health/culturelle_for_kids?gclid=CPPT5I3ngbUCFQUFnQod5RAAyw
And mix them in her yogurt every day during snack time.
