I'm still looking for a new dr for DS and someone recommended her family practitioner. DH and I don't have primary care physicians right now, so we could all become patients there. Thoughts? Experiences?

We switched DD to the FP my husband and I went to when she was about 6 months. When DS was born, he went straight to the FP instead of starting with a pediatrician. Personally, we loved our doctor and had a fantastic relationship with her, which helped a lot. I liked that she got a "bigger picture" view of our kids, since she also treated my husband and me, and it was very convenient to just make one appointment for the whole family rather than multiple appointments with different doctors/practices. Our doctor was very gentle with the kids, so they loved her, and she was also very willing to discuss our treatment with us and find things that worked best for us.
We thought we'd always have the kids go to an FP, but we moved in Dec. and suddenly needed a doctor again when DS got sick. I wen toff of the recommendation of a friend about a pedi group in our new area, and I have to say that we really like the pediatrician the kids go to now. He's really patient and gentle and he takes a lot of time to talk to us during each appointment. So I really think the most important thing is to find a doctor that's the "right fit," regardless of their specialty. It was a little more convenient having everyone in the family at the same practice, but we'll stick with the kids' pedi for now because we like him so much.

Yes, we do. My current family practitioner that I'm seeing for my pregnancy hasn't seen any of the kids yet, but the one we had before did and I really liked it. I find that family practitioners are more open to my wacky, alternative methods than OBs and pediatricians.

We do, but that's the norm in Canada. Peds are basically considered specialists, and from my understanding you need a referral to go to one! I love our family doctor though, so I probably would've gone with her anyways.

We don't, mostly because I'd be frustrated with their level of pediatric knowledge compared to mine. I think for completely healthy kids who just need vaccines and checks to make sure they are growing and developing normally that an FP is a wonderful alternative. As soon as there was a problem identified, I'd want a pediatrician!

We do, though I think things are a little different in Canada. Like @Mrs. Jacks: we see her for well visits and vaccines. As soon as things pass the scope of general care we would be referred out to a Ped. I really like that our family all sees the same doctor, and she has been incredible at fitting us in when needed etc.

Yes! I love our family practice doctor. I think a large percentage of her practice are pediatric patients. But now I see her as my primary too because I've been so astounded with the level of professional and hands on care. She is the perfect doctor for my family and I'm so happy I found her!!

I've gone to my FP since I was five. Well he did retire a few years ago and now I go to his replacement who I also love. I go back and forth about having baby marionberry see my FP only because he's not located near our house (about 45 mins away, close to my work). For that reason, I'll likely choose a local pediatrician. But if I was still living in the area near my work I'd totally have my baby see my FP. From my personal experience they're really great unless your baby has some sort of identified, significant issue.
