I told Olive it was time to wash her foot, and she immediately stuck her left foot out of the bath tub for me!
I was like... but wait, how is that possible???
Does it ever seem like your LO can understand you, when you know they can't?

So cute!!
Lately, i feel like LO is understanding, "no". I've caught her doing something (e.g., licking the floor, eating a page of a book) and she will stop as soon as i say "no." Well, okay...she'll stop and then giggle like she knows what she's doing is wrong.
It's amazing how they just start to understand things, even though you're pretty sure you never taught them!

Haha yes! My LO is only 7 weeks and she pooped the other day and I asked her "did you just poop?" And she looked at me rather guiltily and shook her head as if she were saying "no". And I asked again and she shook her head again! I thought it was so funny.

That's cute! I bet she did know what you were saying though, kids are very smart

@mrbee: wait, are you saying that olive didn't actually know what you were asking? I think she totally did!

@T-Mom: It's hard to know if Olive knows specific words or not!
Charlie picked up words one at a time, and if you asked him to repeat a word he would. Olive seems to pick up words in parallel, and if you ask her to repeat a word she usually ignores you. Even now, she doesn't often use the words that I know she already knows. But then sometimes I'll walk into a room and she'll say dada and then I'll leave for work and she'll say bye-bye. But then she won't repeat them right away, or even use them again for quite a while.
To my knowledge, she doesn't know what foot means. But maybe she does? I will ask her again in the bath tonight!!

I think olive is just a few months younger than my daughter - 17 months old. She definitely started understanding things a few months back and now understands pretty much everything I say to her. So I wouldn't be surprised if olive did understand what you said to her.

@mrbee: I bet she has a lot of words internalized that she doesn't even say... DS is like that too. At 15 mo he will do a lot of things we ask him, like "sit down", even though he never repeats or verbalizes. I think they also create associations, so maybe since washing her foot is something you do during every bath (maybe even in the same order?) she knows the pattern and infer the meaning of "foot". It's amazing how they learn!

@T-Mom: It's hard to describe just how much she doesn't listen! I often tell her things that I know she understands and she just ignores me.
Maybe she's just messing with me... if not, my personal sense is that the foot thing was a fluke. But I am hopeful that it was not! Will try again tonight for sure.

My son has become very distracted while nursing lately. I was lying in bed with him, but he kept watching my DH who was getting ready for work. My husband said to him, "Luke, drink your milk and I will buy you a pony". My LO (6.5 months old) said, "OK" and turned back to me. He obviously had no idea what he was saying, but it was such perfect timing. We were cracking up!

I think she probably understood you! Babies start to understand really well starting around 9 months or so (there was a study not that long ago but I'm too lazy to look for it). LO is 18 months and even though he doesn't talk much I know he understands a ton, BUT he has selective hearing already, so sometimes (lots of times) he just doesn't want to understand!

I think she probably understood what "foot" meant too. If I recall correctly she's about 3 months younger than my DD and it was around that time that my DD started learning body parts even though I didn't really teach her them. It was when she started to follow simple commands more consistently too. And at her 15 month appt, the Dr asked how many body parts she knew and by that time she knew a handful at least.
Most babies are on track receptive-wise before they are expressive about it. So even if she doesn't repeat things back or sometimes does not carry out commands as one would wish, doesn't mean she doesn't understand it.
I like how @babyboymom referred to it as "selective hearing" ... haha. Totally agree...
Babies are usually smarter than we think!
