DS laughs (or smiles) and cries all the time. We laugh that he doesn't ever know if he is happy or sad. DD does it but DS does it much more often.

Yes. She also has a certain smile that always gives way to crying. She doesn't cry much, but cried even less her first few months. That smile was one of our few cues that a meltdown was imminent.

He does when he's bumped his head/hurt himself and I try to make light of the situation. So he can't decide if he wants to laugh because mommy is silly/funny or cry because he's in pain.

Nope, but she has a certain face that everyone else thinks is a grin but I know is the pre-cry grimace!

Only if we're trying to cheer her up while she's crying. Most often when she's on the changing table right before nap or bedtime, and starting to melt down from being tired.
