Does your child brush their own teeth or do you brush them for him/her? If they do brush their own teeth, how old are they and at what age did they start brushing on their own?

C is 2.5 and we brush them first, then it's her turn. I don't think she actually cleans much though. Then again I don't even know how well DH and I do them.

I let my 3 year old and almost 6 year old brush by themselves. When they are done, I do a follow up brushing. I can't quite remember when we started, but this has been our routine for awhile now. I do the same with flossing. They try to do it and then I do a follow up.

Yes but then I do it afterwards to make sure they actually are clean.

Dd brushes her own teeth, but then I always go in and do it after her for the full 2 minutes. She is 3.5. I will be doing it for her for a long time! At least til 8-9

@mediagirl: I really don't remember when we started. My son is 3 1/2 and does his own, and then when he is done, I also brush them--I was told to keep brushing them until he is at least 5.

E's been brushing her own since she was almost 2, I think? She has an electric toothbrush and she's weirdly obsessed with doing them herself...sometimes I go in and help a bit

K brushes her own teeth at 2.5, she's been doing it mostly herself since just after 2. She also uses an eclectic toothbrush and is pretty good with getting all her teeth. I sometimes do a quick follow up when she's finished.

He's 2.5 and brushes his own teeth (and has since ~2). He isn't very good but he does do it and after he's done I will go over them and make sure they're clean.
He's actually gotten pretty good! I'm impressed with him.

She is almost 2.5 and we both brush them. She's getting better about actually brushing, but I always go in after her and make sure they are clean.

We brush my 3 year old's teeth, but he sometimes asks to brush by himself so I brush first and then I let him do it afterwards.

Both of my girls take a turn at brushing their own. For the 3.5yo, I usually pay attention to how she does and then base my effort on that. For the 1yo, I go first and then she gets her turn.

Bennett is 2, and we do it for him. Sometimes he says "I do it!" but then he pretty much just chews off the toothpaste. I like the idea of letting him do it first and then us doing a follow up except that once he has the toothbrush he refuses to relinquish it. Maybe we should start letting him have a turn after we do it.
