Our hospital didn't type E's blood when he was born. I asked his pedi about it this morning, and she said most insurance (mine included) doesn't cover it because they don't think it's a medical necessity, which just seems dumb to me. She said if there's an emergency they'll give him universal blood, and if he needs surgery they'll type it before, but otherwise we'd have to pay $200-$300 out of pocket to have it typed.
Does this seem weird to anyone else? I would think knowing your (or in this case, your LO's) blood type was important! (I called my ins co and she's right, they won't cover it.)
