If so, what's the story behind it?
I know someone who is as American as Apple Pie and she wants her lo to call her Mum. I have no clue why. I think it's more of a European or Australian term than an American term.

That's weird. LO doesn't talk yet, but she will not be saying Mum when she does.

As I mentioned in another thread both my husband and I call our mothers mum. We are from Massachusetts and that's pretty common. I think it probably comes from the fact that there are a LOT of Irish people in the Boston area?

Two friends of mine (sisters, born and bred Americans who have never even traveled internationally) call their mom “mum” and refer to themselves as “mum”. Honestly, I think it’s really weird and sort of pretentious sounding unless you are British or from somewhere else where mum is common.

Haha! I'm a kiwi, so when I hear people saying "Mooooom" it really grates on me!
I don't care what my kids call me when I'm not around as long as they never call me Mom to my face I'll either be Mum, or Mama

I call my mum, mum! I hope my bambinos call me it as well. I don't actually have a reason for saying it...I'm the only one I know who does but I think it sounds much better, more lilting.
Edited to add- I don't recall when I started calling her mum...I think it developed from mumma. I wasn't aware that people may judge me for this! Seems like such a silly thing to criticize.

As an American living in the UK, I often joke that our kids will have the most jacked-up accents.
I'd rather our kids call me mom, but the social programming is all to Mum. So, while I'm sure I can control it at first, once he goes to school and gets exposure to more things "Mum" may be inevitable!
I think it's very weird that people with no reason for the use of it would want to use it.
