But curious... does your LO have their SSN yet? How long did it take to get it?

LO got her SSN pretty soon after birth. 1 month or so, I think.

GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts

@Alivoo01: Haha I would never do that!!!
However if you tell me your mother's maiden name, I will give you next week's winning lotto numbers!
hostess / papaya / 10540 posts
@Leialou: I know, I also wonder that! I'm sure there's some sore of mathematical formula for how they create them, though. I actually hadn't noticed someone has my LO's same SSN!
GOLD / pomelo / 5167 posts
yup! we order them at the same time as we file their birth certificate. So they've had theirs since they are 3 weeks old...

Our LO isn't born yet but as soon as he is, we have a month to go the American consulate to file for citizenship and a passport/SSN. (We're expats in Shanghai) It's going to be an interesting experience for us!

We got ours in about a week or two.
@anniegurumi: within a month?! Shouldn't they give you more time since more women do the confinement month in that country? Hope you don't actually have to make the trip(s) yourself.

I saw the title and was going to come in here to tell everybody not to post...figured the sleep deprivation had finally gotten to @mrbee: !

@Boogs: I know that it's related to geography (I think the first three numbers indicate what state or something.) There is definitely a formula. My old boyfriend and my current husband's were pretty similar since they were both born in Ohio in 1982.
And yes, we got their SS numbers really quickly after they were born. I think hospitals are obligated by law to help you register for your SS number since the IRS started requiring an SS number to claim a child on your taxes.
For my oldest, we lived in the middle of the desert when she was born. We didn't have a real street address, but they required one on the form. I had to just put the city we lived in, and then listed the mailing address below. Well, they MAILED it to the city with no address! Luckily our post office was so small, they knew me and knew I had just had a baby and put it in my husband's box. Otherwise it would have been a giant pain to try to sort it out. What if it got in the wrong hands and someone started ruining my daughter's credit when she was only a few days old? Kind of makes me wonder if we should monitor our kids credit on a yearly basis. Do any of you guys do that?
