I just noticed this on my 2y/o when she curves her back slightly. It feels like her spine but feels bigger than other parts of her vertebrae. She doesn’t seem bothered by me touching it. She hasn’t bumped into anything as far as I know.

I have scoliosis, so we were sure to ask our ped about this when we saw it. He said that often, children's individual vertebrae grow at different rates as they age, and a particularly long vertebrae will stick out like that. He saw no abnormalities with her spine after doing a thorough inspection. She's four now, and it's no longer there. But definitely get it checked out if it worries you!

@Hypatia: thank you so much for your response. Glad to hear that it’s no longer there for your 4 y/o. I am definitely going to ask the pedi but wasn’t sure if i should call Monday or if it could wait until her next wellness appt in June.

Cant edit my post but wanted to add that those greenish spots are not bruises, they’re Mongolian spots which are common is Asian babies

@iluvboba637: I'm not home to double-check this, but when I saw your picture, I thought it looked pretty normal to me! Hopefully it's nothing!

@iluvboba637: i'm not Asian but my kids both have Mongolian marks like that on their backs too!

Sorry I should clarify. It’s the bump on her spine that’s larger than other parts of the spine that I’m worried about

Yep! Both my older LO have different amounts of protrusion of their vertebrae. The bigger ones often end up bruises from them roughhousing too so it looks awful 🤦♀️. The baby is too little to notice but I would guess hers will look uneven too.

@Mrsbells: sorry I hope I didn’t come off as being racially insensitive. Our pedi told us the Mongolian spots are common in Asian babies. I didn’t know they we’re common in other races too.

@iluvboba637: no not at all just wanted to reassure you other kids get them too and so i know how it feels when someone might mistakenly think they are bruises.

@MsMini: thank you for your response. I even checked DS 5 y/o immediately after I noticed it in DD but didn’t see a bump in his spine probably because he’s “grown out of it.” And I never noticed it on DS when he was younger probably because he was chubbier than DD is.

@iluvboba637: I was going to say are you’re kids skinny? I have half Asian kids that are super skinny so their spines look like that and I can just see everything on them

@gotkimchi: DD is average. 25 lbs at 2 y/o. I think 50 percentile at her 18 month visit. We haven’t gone to her 2 year visit yet. thanks for responding. I feel a lot better than when I posted this (and a bit embarrassed now too LOL)

My almost 2 year old sons back looks like this too! I never noticed it in my older daughter, but i think he's skinnier than she was. I was worried something was wrong with him too so I did ask my DH (who thought it looked fine) but forgot to mention it to the ped.
