I just transitioned my almost 4 year old to normal kids toothpaste (minty kind with fluoride). She hates the taste of it, but I feel it cleans her teeth better, and she now knows how to rinse her mouth and spit it out.

She's 3.5 and using fluoride free- but that's what we use, too. She's pretty into spitting right now.

My kids brush their teeth a ton because they're obsessed with it. We do fluoride toothpaste morning and night, and flouride free the rest of the time because their spitting is still hit or miss (they love actually spitting but I think they don't spit the toothpaste foam out, if that makes sense? Like they still swallow the toothpaste, but also like to spit so it's a work in progresses!). We don't use much toothpaste so I'm not concerned about them swallowing a tiny bit of flouride toothpaste each day. They are almost 2.

DD1 started with fluoride toothpaste but she also learned to spit fairly early on. DD2 is 19 months and we haven't decided yet.

The ADA now recommends children use a fluoride toothpaste before age 2. http://mobile.nytimes.com/blogs/well/2014/02/12/dental-group-advises-fluoride-toothpaste-before-age-2/?referer=
Both my girls use Tom's with fluoride.

Dd is 16 months and we've always used fluoride. I don't believe our tap water has fluoride in it, plus it's the current recommendation. We just use a teeny tiny amount.

We went to dentist at two and they suggested changing to a fluoride toothpaste. They said the small amount she swallows isn't that bad and it helped her learn to spit.

No. We started using fluoridated toothpaste (grain of rice sized) twice a day starting around a year (she didn't get her first tooth until 9-10 months) She doesn't know how to spit yet and I haven't even begun to teach her. My dads a dentist and I trust him when he says it's perfectly safe. I have naturally soft teeth that are cavity prone regardless of what I do. I don't want her to suffer unnecessarily, so like to be as proactive as I can be with her oral health.

Just started yesterday! With our 15mo. It's been a point of obsession within the last 24 hours or so.

They have been using fluoride toothpaste for 2ish years. I just bought some fluoride free for the baby!

Both kids started using fluoride toothpaste around 1. My 19 month old doesn't spit yet (well she pretends to but nothing really comes out) so we just give her a tiny amount.

We switched her at 3. The dentist told us that they recommend it even if they can't spit yet. We use a tiny tiny amount but luckily she is starting to get the spitting part.

We started at 2, we just use a tiny amount (dentist Rec). He mostly spits but sometimes forgets...

We have been using fluoride toothpaste since 14 months. We do not drink fluoridated water and my pediatrician had wanted me to do fluoride drops since he cut his first tooth at 6 months, so I figure a little toothpaste won't kill him. We are currently only brushing teeth once a day before bed so it's less of an issue anyway.

We still use fluoride-free at 3.5. Our dentist recommended that we stick with fluoride-free until they can spit. Our tap water is fluoridated, though.

We use fluoride toothpaste, and have since about 18 months, but we have well water (non fluoridated, obviously.)
pomegranate / 3438 posts
We started using it at 2 per our dentists recommendation. He said a grain size twice a day and it is okay if he swallows it because our water is not fluoridated. Before that we were doing fluoride drops. Toothpaste is so much easier!

We don't, but she does get a Flouride supplement when I remember. Our dentist told us to use toothpaste with it even though she can't spit, my pediatrician husband is nervous about it. So we got the supplement from our Doctor. Our town water doesn't have it, unfortunately.

Yes, she's 14 months. But the ADA recommends fluoride for all ages now...I'm behind the times, I need to pick up some new stuff.

Awesome question - I was wondering this myself. LO is currently 3.5, and we use fluoride free toothpaste because he doesn't know how to spit yet. I do need to get him to a dentist though.
We were also given the recommendation to give him fluoride, but I don't give it to him. There was fluoride in my water growing up and I have the worst teeth in the world. None in DH's, never had fluoride growing up and he's never had a cavity in his life. I'm not 100% sold on the "benefits" of fluoride supplements based on my own research.

They both use fluoride. 3 year old DS learned spitting from watching his big sis. He just likes to copy everything she does! We started him on fluoride around 2...

DD was great at spitting out her food at around 18 months when she became such a picky toddler. I knew she would be able to spit out toothpaste so we switched at around 22 months to crest fluoride kids toothpaste.

No he's been using fluoride for 1.5 years now, he'll be 3 in June. The latest recommendations are to start them off with fluoride right off the bat, the risk of cavities outweighing the risk of swallowing a bit.

They've used a smear of fluoridated toothpaste since they started brushing.

She's using a fluoride free one at 15 months. We're using that b/c the pediatrician said to--no idea of the reasoning! He actually wasn't even that concerned about using toothpaste at all, but I figured it would be a good thing for her to get used to.

We use one w fluoride starting around 1.5 I think. A rice sized amount of tooth paste. He can spit it ok. But there's no fluoride in our water so it was recommended.

We started using fluoride toothpaste when DS turn 2. He is getting a lot better at spitting, but still swallows it sometimes.
persimmon / 1129 posts
We have well water (no fluoride) so our pediatrician recommended fluoride toothpaste at 18 months.

When I took my oldest to the dentist for the first time at 3, I was scolded for not using fluoride. He said they're getting so little that it doesn't matter if they swallow and that the risks of caries was much greater. I started using fluoride toothpaste at 2 with my daughter.

Fluoride kids' toothpaste (so a low level) 1-2 times per week, Toms floride free the rest of the time. They're 2 and 4 and I don't trust them to always spit.

We use fluoride tooth paste morning and night... Usually just water or ff pate during the day. Ds is good about gargling and spitting out. He doesn't mind tooth brushing

My dentist recommended fluoride toothpaste even for my 2 year old. He said a rice grain size amount is all she needs

@dagret: us too. Flourish toothpaste because we have well water.
