Sorry for the strange thread title! I didn't know how else to describe it!
For the last few days, E has been making a really weird sound while she is playing or eating. It's like she's gasping in shock or excitement but it sounds really strangled, like she's having some sort of seizure or something!! The first time she did it I was terrified - it's so loud!
Did anyone else's LO go through this phase?? It's so strange!

My lo did this...not high-pitched, but sucking in of breath that sounded like straining to breathe. I think he was just playing with the different kinds of sounds he could make. It was most common around 14 months. (And I was very vigilant to make sure he wasn't actually having trouble breathing since he's a preemie who was on a ventilator...he wasn't.)

@Cherrybee: my LO does this when she's crying. It gets my husband every time because he thinks she can't breathe. But I'm 99% sure she just discovered how to make that weird noise and does it when crying hard.

Yes!!! From about 8-11 months. Freaked people out. It was like she was being strangled, and she'd do it randomly and then laugh.

My 16 mo DD does something like this, but it's not scary, so maybe it's something different. It's like she's trying to whistle or make bird sounds or something, but she purses her lips and sucks in her cheeks and then makes these weird lamaze/hooting/panting sounds... She thinks it's hilarious.

My LO does this when he laughs from time to time! I was super freaked out by it, but it's just a noise that he figured out he could do. He did this a lot around the 7-8 month mark, and only occasionally now!

OMG I thought I was the only one whose kid did that. At like 8-10ish months she'd just inhale really sharply like she couldn't breathe and then crack up. Used to make my heart stop.

It's like the sound someone makes when they've been underwater for too long and they come up and gasp for air. Very dramatic, Hollywood style "CPR worked, they just started breathing again" kind of gasp.

Both of my boys do this. Freaked me out every time, but then they just laugh! Like others, I think they're just experimenting with sounds and noises.

My DD did this on & off randomly from 3-6 months! She almost always did it during diaper changes and I was worried for a bit but it wasn't consistent enough for me to bring it up to her dr, and then it went away. She's almost 1yr now and hasn't done it in a long time

Dd just started doing this the other day, she's 9 weeks tomorrow. She does it when she's falling asleep, freaks me out!
