LO is 5 weeks old and my dog had been here since the day we brought him home from the hospital. Besides being curious and confused, my dog hasn't reacted to him much.
Well tonight DH was trying to keep LO calm while I took a much needed bathroom break (couldn't hold it!). But LO just wanted to nurse and obviously DH couldn't provide so LO was screaming his head off and poor DH was upset he couldn't make him happy. I could hear our dog running back and forth through the house while I was in the bathroom but I figured he was just being playful because he had been in his crate for a few hours while we were out.
I finally get LO on the boob and calmed down and call the dog to come cuddle with me while I'm nursing, and he jumps on the bed and soon jumps back down and I notice a huge pee spot on the bed!! We get it cleaned up and I go into the baby's room to throw away a diaper and notice poop in the floor. I figure the dog needed to go out (hence the running back and forth in the house. He usually sits in front of the door to let us know and while we were all in the bedroom he was trying to get our attention) and combined with the stress of the baby crying he had some accidents. This dog NEVER has accidents. We can't even get him to use a puppy pad on a rainy day. He will go outside and stand in a monsoon just to avoid going in the house.
DH is super stressed and aggravated at this point and I'm trying to keep him calm. So I send him into the living room to watch a big basketball game he's been looking forward to and tell him to relax and unwind and shut myself in the bedroom to finish taking care of LO for the night. Next thing I hear is him cursing. The dog squatted and peed on his pillow bed in the living room.
The poor thing looks guilty and upset as we were cleaning it up. I'm sure he's stressed and confused. But I can't figure out why all of the sudden he's having accidents after 5 weeks! My theory is DH is kind of the leader of the house and this is the first time he really got upset and stressed this bad and it freaked the dog out. DH continued to be stressed too no matter how much I tried to play it down and keep the air light.
I sent the dog with him to the living room and told him to cuddle and relax with him to help him feel secure and calm just in case that's it. I had a heart to heart with DH and made him feel better. Any ideas or advice? I can't handle MORE pee and poop! My baby makes enough of that!
The stress may be getting to him. Does he have a Thundershirt? Our dog does, and it helps when he's stressed. Also, was the poop runny-is there a chance he could have gotten into something, or might not be feeling well? Our dog will go in the house if she has a UTI.
Hang in there!
