So I have had real battles with my 11 yo dog marking in my house! This was the best dog before I had kids but ever since they came along he won't stop marking! He has been neutered since that's always the first suggestion. We try to keep him on our main floor where it's hardwood onlybut we like to have a rug in our family room. We have thrown out 2 shag rugs in the last 2 years after being repeatedly pissed on by this dog. We are looking to buy a replacement (rug, not dog 
).. Suggestions on material that might be less appealing to pee on? Or a deterrent spray that actually works? We have tried vinegar to no avail. I would really likes soft surface for LO to play on, but preferably not one soaked in urine. Help!

Oh sweetie, I feel your pain. We keep our pug in a male wrap. He wriggles out of it sometimes, but it prevents most of his marking. We have three that we cycle through. I just wash them when he marks in them. My mom uses them for her dog and puts a maxi pad in the wrap so she doesn't have to wash as often.

@Ra: yes, we have tried this too! I have a dachshund and it just doesn't cover the vital part effectively. Plus, getting my husband to put it back on after letting him out is just as great a battle!

Does he do it when you leave, or in front of you? Often times, animals became anxious (or pissy) when big changes happen, such as children.
We crated our pets when we first got them and broke the crates back out when our LO arrived b/c one dog was having major anxiety and chewing on her legs. The crate gives them a safe space to retreat to, and you could also crate him for short periods if you leave the house.

I would keep the dog on you (umbilical cord leash set up) at all times and when not possible in crate.
I don't know what would deter a dog to mark that would be safe to apply to your things, and for you and your LO to touch.
It's more work but in the long run easier to fix the behaviour rather than patch why he is doing it?
