Hi bees, I have a few questions for those of who made dohl go ims (towers). I found plenty of great tutorials online but no one mentions how long it took to complete them.
Approximately how many hours did it take to complete a name tower? Any tips for avoiding finger burns? If my baby is napping on my back in the beco butterfly (only time I have to try doing this), will the glue fumes be a hazard to him?

I made two gumball towers that were super simple for my son's 100 day baek-il tomorrow! if I hadn't run out i could've been done with both in an hour!
(not the bean ones i heard those were hard and tedious - will do those later for dohl!)
i made mine while ds was asleep at night. but i didnt smell any fumes from my glue gun.

Ugh I need to know this too. I have less than a month. But... I think I may go felt or foam rather than beans or candy....so it'll be a lot quicker. And I may do square rather than cylinder....

@mrsjyw -those look great! I am limiting myself to two bean towers, one with his korean name and the other his chinese name (which has very complicated characters) because we live in CA but are going to NY for his dohl party (we moved west recently and all of our family is in NY). So I have less than 3 weeks to make the towers AND ship them to NY.
@wheres_c - they originally were towers of korean rice cakes and other sweets, and were used as decorations for milestone birthday celebrations, like the sixtieth or seventieth, which are big deals in korean culture. Infant mortality used to be high in Korea back in the day, so reaching 100 days and then the first birthday were big achievements celebrated with elaborate festivities as well. The towers figure prominently in pictures of the baby, and depict names, the baby's asian zodiac sign, etc. Now the towers are usually fake and made of beans glued onto a tube like an oatmeal canister or paper towel roll.

@tequiero21 -felt or foam sounds interesting, you can make them pretty colorful and full of texture. What about the Korean characters, will it be difficult to cut them out with scissors? I can't picture square towers, do you have an image, like on pinterest?

@Myicitygirl: @tequiero21: i think you can buy felt balls (diff sizes) that would probably work really well! and easier to place too since the sizing can be manipulated!

My bean towers took a LONG time. Probably spending a few hours each night, total of two or three weeks? But I was using REALLY small beans (cannellini). Even though my oatmeal canisters were pretty small compared to other towers. My candy towers (gumballs and starlight mints) both took like 30 mins because the candy pieces were so much bigger than the beans and you have to do so much fewer pieces to cover the tower.
They took so long, I think I am just going to take Wagon Jr.'s and pick off the beans in the name and animal part for LMW's!
Again, I used seriously tiny beans. I wanted them to look like pine nuts. You can use bigger beans. Using a bean twice as large would take half the time!

@mrs.wagon: lol, you are scaring me! Please tell me you made more than two towers! I will be sure to use large beans. I would love to do a dragon tower but just don't think I will have the time.

@mrs.wagon: i just saw pictures of your towers you posted on an earlier board. They look great, no spaces showing between beans. Not sure I can be so precise. You did 3 bean towers?
@mungbean: I saw you also posted about finishing up a tower. How long did the first take? Was the second faster?

@Myicitygirl: I did 3 bean towers and 2 candy towers... 5 in all. The bean towers were one that said "chuk dol", one that had his korean name, and one with a cow (his chinese animal is ox). Sorry to scare you but I am also a crazy perfectionist! They were truly a labor of love.
