First time Hand Foot Mouth experience for me. Day two and its hitting my 1.5 year old fast and hard. My 3.5 year old daughter doesn't have it yet. But she's been sick on her own and stayed home from school all last week. Here are my questions:
Who do you suggest I notify? And do I keep the older healthy girl home from school as a precaution?

My sick DD2 was at sunday school 3 days before the onset of this HFMD. She is not in preschool, but DD1 is. Coincidentally DD1 was mildly sick this week, so I've kept her home the entire week. She hasn't been at school since 8 days ago.
I always get emails from DD1's school when someone in her class gets HFM. Should I notify my church, older girl's school? And also, should I keep DD1 home next week as a precaution.
And then, just for sympathy, poor DD2 is getting this bad. Sores in her mouth already. I'm search HB for tips on how to deal with this .

I'm not the best help on your original question, DD has always been in daycare so I just notified them. I'd ask my doc about older sib and keeping them home or not.
As far as keeping her comfortable, I'd suggest a wide variety of soft foods to entice her to eat when the mouth sores hurt too bad. Pouches galore, pudding, jello, applesauce. Anything soft and fairly low acid, low sodium so as to not irritate the sores further. Good luck mama! Hope DD can get comfortable quickly.

@agold: I would flick a message through to your Sunday school because HFM is pretty contagious and you may have already unknowingly passed it on. With regards to sending your older child back to daycare I’d probably continue to keep her home if it wasn’t going to cause you hardship.

I would call, it can’t hurt. My little one got it when we were on vacation and we had no idea what was wrong. She was screaming and had a fever so we thought it was teething to the extreme. We did go to an urgent care after a second sleepless night. If memory serves they wanted us to control the fever while it lasted so that helped a little with the pain, otherwise no meds. But it was a scary few hours and if I’d know of the possibility I would have googled earlier just to know - as I’m sure my heightened anxiety as a new mom wasn’t calming.
Good luck! We couldn’t as she was a baby, but maybe think through non-red popsicles?

We told our daycare when my son had it at 18 months because he was out of daycare for a week. No one else got it somehow but I caught it. Personally, I wouldn’t keep my older home unless he was sick. I know it’s contagious but DW didn’t get it and no one else at his daycare did. I definitely couldn’t be home from work that long unless it was a serious emergency situation.
We dosed him with Tylenol/Advil or whatever round the clock. He was so miserable and wouldn’t eat. Gave him any liquids he would take: formula, juice, chocolate milk, etc. It was really bad for 2 nights, 3rd night was bit better, 4th noticeably better. Then just letting the sores heal and recover. For me it was super uncomfortable but I didn’t have sores in my mouth. I just took Advil and had to awkwardly explain the remnants of the sores on my hands to all my clients when I went back to work (they took a month to fade)
