I am looking to get an audiobook or two for an upcoming trip but I'm not sure what to use to download something? It seems like most things are a subscription service which I am not interested in!

With Audible, you don't need to have a subscription to purchase audiobooks. If you have an Amazon account, you can purchase any audiobook you want from Audible on a one-time basis with no subscription. You just download it to your phone using the Audible app.
Having a subscription is advantageous because you get discounts on a huge amount of books. Also, if you have Amazon Prime, they're running a special where you get three months of Audible free (that's three free books, a value of around $45):

@Oxana: okay! I downloaded audible but I was under the impression I had to pay monthly and that is just too much for the amount I will be able to use it. I will give it a try.

Check your local library. We have access to several subscription services there.
