DD had a high fever Saturday into Tuesday -- 102-105 degrees. She went on antibiotics on Sunday night because her doctor said it was an ear infection. She's on amoxicillin. Anyways, this rash appeared yesterday and has gotten a bit worse today. It's only on her trunk. Does it look like an amox reaction to you or does it look like roseola? Sorry for the crappy pictures - she was having none of it!

Looks like the rash we saw when our DD had roseola. She had a mild case (only on trunk). I know the associated rash can present as much redder and reach all over.

Possibly roseola, but rashes are tricky, look for resolution in the next 3-5 days. Another thing to put on your differential diagnosis is EBV (mono), often children who had EBV get Amox for presumed bacterial infection and end up with a rash like this one. Regardless, I'd probably see your doc for counseling on whether to stop the amox and consideration of testing for EBV (not mono spot, but titers).

@coopsmama: Please do. The differential diagnosis is not clear enough to pin point one etiology over the other and if it is EBV, they'll want to stop the antibiotics and if it's a drug rash they'll want to stop the antibiotics. They'll also want to see it to know if they should be putting amox allergy on your baby's allergy list! These all are really good reasons for a visit

@Mrs. Jacks: Should I make sure the appointment is for this afternoon or can it wait for the morning? (Both kids are napping now and normally do until 4 so didn't want to wake them unless it was serious!) Thanks for all the info and help - I was hoping you'd respond! It would be so much easier to be a mom if I had your knowledge.

@coopsmama: either is fine, but for antibiotic guidance I'd want sooner rather than later.
As for being a doctor mama, it's a blessing and a curse. I think I've had two instances that I've been so freaked out about cancer irrationally! But for the day to day stuff, I'm so grateful that I have the knowledge base to be able to say "sick" vs "not sick" and make that appointment or not. I'm also lucky to have the best pediatrician in the world!

@Mrs. Jacks: Okay, this whole ear infection ordeal had made me realize I need to find a new ped for my little ones!! I called in and talked to this nurse who spoke to our doctor -- she told me it sounds like an amoxicillin reaction and to stop the antibiotics but didn't want to see her or anything. So now I'm nervous that stopping the antibiotics without being seen could have a bad effect -- is that possible?! I'll be taking recommendations on our local mom's FB group later to get a new one - I feel really blown off haha.

@coopsmama: I think after 8 days, it's fine to stop. I sometimes do only 7 day courses for ear infections anyway. Where do you live? (Wall me). Who knows, I might have a rec for you
