DS (age 2.5) just got a firefighter pretend play set and I've been surprised how obsessed he is with it. I'm thinking of acquiring outfits over the next few months for a dress-up chest for Christmas.
How old was your LO when they began playing with dress-up clothes regularly? How long did the phase last?
Also, if anyone can suggest themes that are particularly popular with boys, that would be greatly appreciated.

DS dressed up more once he turned 3. He loves his Dr kit and jacket, his astronaut outfit, and capes of various sorts.

B has been into dress up since about 3. His favourites are the superhero capes, but we just got an astronaut costume that's pretty popular too.

My kids are girls, but among their group of friends, the same things are popular among boys and girls, subbing a knight for a princess once they get older. My four year old and her friends are still into dressing up. Hats and helmets seem especially popular. Other ideas:
Costumes: police officer, doctor, astronaut, knight, chef
Helmets/hats: firefighter, chef, robot
Extras: capes, wings (bumblebee, butterfly, etc)

DS is just 3 and really in to dress up. He puts in some kind of costume everyday and even takes pick out his regular outfits very seriously.
He has a firefighter, pirate, construction worker, a set of 4 superhero capes and masks, a Daniel tiger costume that I made for last Halloween, and a sparkly red tutu. When we go to our friends house he loves to put on their princess dresses. I especially love the capes because we can wear them too to play together.

My boys are not into dressing up but I wish they were! A dress up box sounds like a wonderful idea. One of my friends growing up had one and I loved going to her house for that reason. I think you will get a lot of use out of it. Check out consignment stores. They should be putting out Halloween costumes pretty soon.

The pictures in the link make these look super lame, but my daughters have the girlier butterfly versions and they are fantastic! For boys they do dragons, bats, parrots, firebirds...

It was raining here yesterday so daycare got out their costumes and let the kids dress up. Xander (4) had on a superhero outfit and was OBSESSED and now I have to buy the whole family costumes! So I'd vote superhero for your LO!

My son was never into it, but I would have GONE TO TOWN!
You can also put in items of clothing, like overalls, flannel shirts, bathing suit and rash guard, goggles, a tie, winter gear...
