I always wear a suit for interviewing, even though I don’t wear a suit at work. If you don’t own a suit, I wouldn’t buy one just for an interview – you can generally find decent suits for cheap at consignment shops and thrift stores, which should be even cheaper than Target/ON.

For the interviews where I didn’t go full on suit, I did still wear a black skirt (knee length, no shorter), a button-down shirt, hose and closed-toe pumps.

It doesn't matter if the office environment is business casual, i think it's best to always look professional in interviews. I would wear a suit, or something that mimics a suit - black cardigan, dark pencil skirt, ironed button-down shirt.

I think you can wear dress pants and nice top (it can be a cardigan, button down shirt, or a simple knit shirt with a cardigan/jacket) or you can wear a dress with leggings and a jacket, maybe like this: http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=1040218&vid=1&pid=712133042 - as long as the dress is around knee length or longer.

Normally I would say suit, but in this case a dress feels like it might be appropriate as well, as long as it isn't short and sleeveless. A nice cardigan on top and you are dressed and can wear it to work. I'd rather see that than a mismatched suit or suit separates in different colors on an interview.

I haven't worn a button down under a jacket in 20 years, I would do a knit shell.

I'd definitely say a suit, or at least nice slacks and a blazer. I actually teach people about interviewing as part of my job We say to dress "one step above the position", so if the office is business casual, dress business professional.

I guess I'll go against the grain, but I rarely wear full-on suits to interviews.

I usually interview in -
- A cardigan, blouse, and slacks (or skirt)
- Any kind of professional looking dress

@Mrs. Lion: I'm fairly certain I have recently seen suiting pieces in Target. In the Targets by me, they are along the wall in the back of the misses section (adjacent to maternity). If you can't find a jacket in the exact fabric as the pants, don't do the same color. Maybe do a grey jacket with black pants or a non-black cardigan.

@Mrs. Lion: for nonprofits, i really don't think you need a suit. We are interviewing at my agency now and I agree with dressier than normal clothes. Black pants or skirt and a dressy top/cardigan should be fine. A blazer if you can find it but not necessary. I have never worn a suit to an interview!

@Mrs. Lion: jc Penney! My last suit I bought a year ago for an interview and paid less than $30- and I think it's a wonderful suit. I think it's the worthy from brand? I've had the chance to wear it three times, and still wear the pants as dress pants frequently.

Honestly too, I have bought a suit, kept price tags on (but tucked them in) and returned them. Just a thought

I interview for non-profit positions, and I would suggest at least a blazer with pants/skirt or a suit.

How about NY&Co - I've gotten great interview pieces there.

I've always worn a suit to interviews. Better to be overdressed than under.

@Mrs. Lion: I work in a middle school, but it might be a different environment--but women pretty much never wear suits in interviews anymore. I'd go with the pants you bought, untucked button up, and cardigan, with a very low heel.

@Mrs. Lion: If the shirt is shorter than your blazer and it's a shell rather than a collared shirt, no need to tuck it if it makes you uncomfortable.

I also don't love how I look with a tucked shirt (big boobs, short torso problems) and I have interviewed for many jobs without the tuck. As long as it doesn't look sloppy, go with what makes you feel good! And good luck in the interview!

@Mrs. Lion: I think something like this is totally fine in a workplace where people are wearing khakis and polos or business casual. This is just based on my 13 years in education...I think I posted here (maybe somewhere else) way back about what to wear at a teacher job interview and everyone said "suit", but that felt too formal for me, so I wore an A line, knee length skirt, a shell, and a black blazer with heels and I was still by far the dressiest person in the room, so I was glad I hadn't done a full on suit. On the last two pictures, I would delete the long necklace and do full length,rather than cropped pants.

I agree with @anagram's examples. Hearing you describe the environment there makes me think a suit is too much. I agree that black slacks, a silky shell (tucked or untucked) and cardigan are a great way to go.
FWIW, here is my reasoning on no suit (and I have worked in very corporate, businessy environments and in much more casual, fashion & entertainment environments in NYC)
- I met with a recruiter once and wore a black sheath dress, a long gray cardigan and black pumps. She said what I wore was Perfection for an interview, that women didn't need to wear suits anymore. That was for a corporate position at one of the Big 4 accounting firms. I got that job!
- I have now gone on a few interviews in more casual environments (fashion and entertainment) where I wore black skinny pants, a shell/blouse and either a cute cropped jacket or long cardigan. It was professional enough without being too stuffy. I was told by the HR lady at one place that she loved my outfit. And after I got the job we became friendly and she told me that in a casual environment, a very formal outfit can make them think you aren't the right personality fit for the job or their culture. If your interviewer is wearing jeans and a t shirt and you're wearing a suit, it's kinda weird. So I do think knowing audience is key.
- I have a best friend who has climbed the corporate ladder at huge fortune 500's and she shocked me a few years ago when she said she's never owned a suit. She wore slacks, button down and a sweater to every interview - and got all of the offers!

So I now am much less in the "has to be a suit" camp. I think that's pretty outdated unless it's an industry that actually wears suits daily (a law firm, for example). Looking neat and professional is all that matters. I have also interviewed and discussed candidates with my superiors and "they were underdressed" has never come up! Except one time when a guy literally came in cargo shorts and a t shirt. Haha.

I think that the pants you got are good. Depending on the length id do a low heel or flat. Then I like the options that anagram posted. I'm a big fan of scouring the sale racks at Gap for semi-professional clothing. You can get a silky shell for like $20 on sale. Not bad!
