So...my parents still have the crib ny little brother (23) slept in...it's a drop rail crib. They also used it for my nephews visits (he's 5).
I'm not sure how I feel about this...what would you do? Our PNP is here.

I believe there are conversion kits you can buy that lock the drop side.

If you don't feel ok with it, say no. My ILs bought a drop side crib at a yard sale, and I wasn't ok with it so I told them no. They were mad, but I don't feel comfortable with drop sides (even after the conversion kit, due to the mattress gap) so that was that. I bought a pack n play to replace it. You're the mama!

We have a drop-side crib that has been "converted" into a non-drop-side (basically it just drills a screw into it and has supports underneath so the drop side can no longer drop) and I'm fine with it. But if you don't feel comfortable, just bring your pnp!

I think it's probably fine for a 5yo, but I wouldn't let my baby sleep in it. It's more than just that it's a dropside, but also that it's so old. I'm sure there have been lots of safety improvements in the last 23 years.

If it makes you uncomfortable, say something. I would never let my LO sleep in the crib my ILs have. It was my FIL's as a baby... he's almost 70. FWIW, LO sleeps in the drop-side crib I slept in as a baby. We fixed the drop side and put it against the wall.

I think I am going to set up the PNP and tell them about the conversion kits.

We borrowed a gorgeous crib from my cousin which turned out to be double drop side (ack!). After many worried tears on my part, my husband came up using with those plastic zip ties to hold the sides in place. I figured if he can't get the sides to drop or move putting all his weight on them, neither will a baby.
I think it's all about how safe it feels to you--if it's rickety, has weird toxic paint or if you can't secure the sides to your comfort, maybe just bring along a pack n' play as a backup. It's your baby!

My sister used one at my parents' house with my nephew, but they converted it themselves (basically, hammered some nails in so the side couldn't drop). But it was much more recent that what you are talking about. I'd probably do the PnP while the baby is really little, and then consider the drop side one (especially if it is converted) later on, when the baby is a little older.

Uh, just checked the mattress...it's sagging considerably. No way in hell L is sleeping in that.

Bummer. My parents have a drop side crib. The first time we went to visit with M, I went into the room where the crib is and shook that crib with all my might. I tried SO hard to get the thing to drop - and it wouldn't. I don't know how they ever got it to drop in the past but it sure won't drop for me and man did I ever try.
@dagret, would they consider getting a new mattress? Have you attempted to drop the side? We were going to "fix" my parents' crib if I hadn't run into so much trouble with dropping it...and it never dropping...

I think it's sturdy- I sure shook the heck out of the sides (it's a double drop side!) , but for now my main concern is the mattress...we'll see what happens.

oh yeah, personally i'd be much more concerned about the mattress quality/material/firmness than a drop side crib. pnp totally works for us when we go to others' homes!

@dagret: I would definitely get a new mattress. Even I don't want to sleep on one that old. I especially don't want my child to.

My in laws will have a drop side crib at their house. For the amount of time our baby will be sleeping there I'm not going to let it bother me. The crib is only 8 years old and was used for 2 kids already. I won't have it in our nursery, but for the occasional visit to nona's I'm trying not to worry about it.

I would just take your PNP to your parents. You can always find them used for cheap if you want one to leave at their house.

The crazy thing is the mattress is only 5 years old - my mom said they bought a new one when my nephew was born. But the thing is super soft. I think they are going to buy a new mattress. L slept great in the PNP last night!

My dad bought a drop side one for me when ds was born (5 years ago), and when he brought it over for dd last month, he bolted the rail so that it's super secure, AND that side of the crib is by the wall, so even if it would go down (which it won't, my dad made sure), it wouldn't be an issue.
