DH and I have been saving up for a DSLR for the past couple of months, and we almost have enough to buy one! Now I need advice on a memory card. How much storage would you recommend? Would a 16GB be enough, or is a 32GB necessary?

I have a 4GB memory card and it can hold over 1000 photos. I think 16 would be fine.
eta: I don't usually keep that many on there though. I'm paranoid that it will corrupt and I'll lose all my pictures. I download them every couple months.

I've got an 8GB one in my camera at work, and at home we have a 16GB one. Personally, I think 16 would be fine, just make sure you back up your pictures somewhere else in case your card gets damaged.

we have a 4GB card which is ok for now. but it all depends on if you plan to keep photos on the card or if you delete them as soon as you upload them

I have several cards. Both of those will allow you to store a ton of photos. It just depends on how often you want to delete from the card and what mode you shoot in. RAW will take up the most space but you will be able to do the most with the photo, editing wise if necessary.

16 is plenty, but they are all pretty cheap now, so either would be fine. I have this 32 gb card right now that is $20 that's been working just fine. Make sure to check slick deals for sales and deals before you buy!

@lawbee11: Definitely read your user's manual as to what types/sizes of memory cards are recommended for your camera!
