Could someone please explain a duvet cover to me? I have no idea what one is!

It goes over the duvet like a pillow case. and a duvet is just like a quilt, but you don't want to use it as such because it's white and will get dirty and it's not pretty...

Imagine if you had a plain, white down comforter, that would be the duvet. You can buy covers (obviously in all sorts of colors and patterns) to slip over the duvet. The cover comes off for easy washing.

Like Twist said, a duvet it basically a padded blanket that you put a duvet cover over, making it easier to clean.
I always had duvets and duvet covers all my life... I thought everyone had them lol!

@.twist.: @IRunForFun: ok thanks y'all! I get it now. I was looking on IKEA and saw duvet covers and white comforters....nothing called a duvet so I was confused. Lol. Does it zip shut or something? How's it stay on?

@Koolbreeze: Some zip shut, some have buttons and some just have a piece of fabric that folds over the bottom... The zipper ones are the most practical and stay on easier!

@pui: I've always had them too and didn't realize people used anything else as their main bedding. However, then I met DH who has only ever had comforters/quilts and I tried to conform him to duvets. I'm slowly starting to feel like I may switch to quilts. UGH. He somehow manages (and I've never had this problem in my 22 years of life before him) to get the duvet scrunched up at the bottom of the duvet cover. I've even started pinning it. I don't know what else to do!

@.twist.: Yeah same here!! My DH had never heard of a duvet until we started living together lol! We use duvets in this house
Weird with your duvet moving so much... maybe your duvet is too small for your duvet cover...?

@pui: When I shake it out it fits perfectly. haha He just sleeps wrong I think

@.twist.: I'm the opposite! I had quilts or comforters all my life and never heard of a duvet cover till I was with an ex who had a duvet/duvet cover. I like the idea of the duvet and cover, but still use a quilt because I have had it for a few years and am too cheap to buy new stuff right now. Maybe when we upgrade our bed!!

@.twist.: I've sewn ribbons into the corners of both the cover and the comforter (not using the word duvet at all to avoid confusion It helps a little but not a ton. Weirdly, in our old apartment the comforter was always bunching on the bottom, but now it hasn't since we moved. We have a queen blanket on a king bed though, while we look for a new one, and I wonder if that has something to do with it.
I always had regular comforters growing up. What I think is sort of gross now is we didn't even always use top sheets, just a fitted sheet and comforter, that got washed a couple of times a year at best. Seems icky now.

Growing up we called everything a bedspread...no matter if it was a quilt, comforter, whatever. Lol.

@.twist.: @pui: nothing makes DH zone out faster than when I start talking about linens. All I have to do is mention the word "duvet" and his eyes glaze over. Men

@Foodnerd81: lol, growing up we had the same arrangement, too! i didn't really understand flat sheets at hotels until i was almost out of my teens
i love using fluffy down comforters now with duvet covers! so comfy. i still don't like using flat sheets though just too bunchy

@tysonja: I hate flat sheets! No matter what it ends up bunched at the foot of the bed!
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@tysonja: But then, do you wash your duvet cover frequently? I only wash it a few times a year, because the sheet is always between our bodies and the cover. I hate the unstuffing, restuffing part of it. I also spread everything out before bed-- not quite making the bed but enough that it's even. DH like a "nest" aka a bundle of blankets and sheets that he burrows under. I can't stand it if it isn't smooth!

@Foodnerd81: hehe yeah i wash it every few weeks or more i don't mind stuffing it too much because i make dh help me!

Our duvet cover is a plain white one that gets horribly wrinkled! I hate it!!!!! Any ideas for a non wrinkle white one???

@Foodnerd81: I have to wash ours every couple weeks since it is white. It is even more of a pain now since we got a king bed. Feel like it is a workout!!

@LovelyPlum: haha! you should see him when I ask him to help me put the duvet cover back on. *glazed over*
@Smurfette: I end up crawling right inside the duvet. DH thinks this is hilarious!

@.twist.: I know that look It's usually followed by eye rolls and grumbles.

We use a duvet/comforter and a cover without a flat sheet. I wash the cover with the rest of the sheets. Actually our covers are both home made from two flat sheets sewn together anyway!
