LO is 11.5 months old, and I am planning to fully wean from breastfeeding over the next couple of weeks. Right now her nurses twice, wake up and before bed. Sometimes he sleeps through until around 7:30 and we will nurse then, but often he wakes up between 4 and 6 and nurses and then goes back to sleep.
So, if I stop offering for him to nurse at that early waking, what should I do? Offer water or milk?Just comfort him and try to put
him back down? I can't see it going well!

I had to make my husband go in anytime I wasn't going to nurse. Could your SO try and soothe him back to sleep? I wouldn't really want to introduce a bottle of something at that point since you want him to eventually stop waking then.

@Jennibenni: With my daughter I was able to go in and soothe her back to sleep by rubbing her back and/or rocking her. It probably took about 2 weeks before she stopped waking for that feeding. I also consciously made a point to up her solids throughout the day. Good luck!

We were in a similar situation right before we weaned DS2. Weaned at 13.5 months. He continued to wake in the early morning hours for a few weeks. I offered a bottle of whole milk during that time and after a few weeks he stopped walking up altogether.

@Foodnerd81: Usually if my husband goes on at that time it immediately escalates into full scale meltdown. Ugh.@mrswin: @winniebee: He actually woke up at 5:30 this morning but didn't seem to want to nurse. We did lots of snuggles but then he got really upset when I tried to put him back down. Baby steps I guess!

Mine was older and I only was night weaning (plus trying to get her out of our bed because her habit was to wake up and I would nurse her in our bed where she would sleep the rest of the night). I just either ignored her (she whined) or comforted her (if she seemed too upset). I would tell her everything is okay and offer to rub her back. If you offer milk or water they might keep waking up for that.

@Jennibenni: Yeah when I first made the change I had to rock her to sleep before I could put her back in the crib but that didn't last too long. The other alternative is to leave him when he wakes at that time and just let him fuss it out but it totally depends on his temperament and your comfort level.
