Right, come on, tell me - did anyone do this/consider doing this?!
I've just watched a documentary on which a lady made her placenta into a smoothie and drank it.... and it just got me to thinking - really????!!!!! Oh good gracious....!

@Ali: Mrs. Hopscotch did it!

@Andrea: Oh my goodness, that encapsulation idea was what that section of the documentary was about!
I actually really like eating offal - like liver and kidneys - but, oh, I don't know..... it was just kinda ewwwww!

Yeah it's definitely not for me. But there is obviously something to it since all mammals in the wild ear their placentas.
GOLD / wonderful coffee bean / 18478 posts
@Ali: Yeah, can't say I have any burning desire to do this either!

I'm all for placenta encapsulation and have done quite a bit of research on the process and philosophy behind it. Don't think I could go the smoothie route though...
One of my favorite bloggers wrote a few entries on this subject that I think are really well-written, informative, and balanced.

I wish I would've done placenta encapsulation!
I've had bouts of ppd this go round especially if I get too exhausted, which is kinda the story of mommyhood with an infant. lol I've heard from lots of moms that this helped with that so who knows, maybe I would've adjusted alot easier!
Didn't know anyone in my area that did it though and didn't look into doing it myself. Next time I will definitely be doing it!

@MamaMoose: Yes but they do it to ward off predators!
At any rate, I've heard wonderful things, and terrifying things (terrible side effects and even PPD, in some women, though it claims to calm that). Either way, not for me. No judgment, though.
If I were to do it, it would certainly be in pill form. I wouldn't be making a stir fry from it.

@ladyfingers: The stir fry comment reminds me of Maryann Forrester on True Blood. She didn't use a placenta... but she did stir fry something nasty. And put it in a souffle.
I don't think placenta encapsulation is something I could do.
bananas / 9628 posts
I wouldn't have it in a smoothie, or tea, or stew, or really any variation where it touched the inside of my mouth or I could taste it, but I'd totally do the encapsulation thing if we could afford it! I wouldn't want them doing it at my house though, I don't wanna see it, smell it or have more people in the house after coming home with a new baby.

So funny, when I bred my dog, I gave her the placenta to eat, since it was advised a lot in my research and discussing with other breeders. Didn't think too much of it, beyond the fact that it would give my lil baby some much needed nutrition.
BUT... if it were MY turn to eat it? Um...pass please?
*Edit: OK, I just read Mrs.Hopscotch's post and in pill form, it actually doesn't seem too bad...

@ladyfingers: Stir fry! Ahh! I don't know whether to gag or laugh at your comment
It's a very interesting concept... not sure if I would ever try it, though...

More power to the women that can do it, but I definitely couldn't...I would be gagging the entire time.

@MungBean: I read a blog post where some chick did that! And tacos! Apparently there's a whole slew of recipes online. Blargh!

I saw a docu where a woman made "placenta prints." It was her SAHM business.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
Definitely not. I can't even think about it without feeling sick.

I didn't even want to see my placenta. I think DH is still traumatized by the smell.

HB is the first place that I was exposed to consumption of the placenta, and while it has informed me quite a bit, I don't think it's for me.
honeydew / 7589 posts
I'll be "eating" (via encapsulation) my placenta when this LO is born.
I've done the research, watched the differences in my clients who do and those who don't, and I think it really is helpful in promoting milk production, avoiding PPD, and in general just giving energy and lifting moods.
I won't be paying for someone to come to my home though, my husband will be encapsulating it for me. He's seen enough placentas being encapsulated to not be bothered by it by now.
GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts
Not for me. I hate taking large pills and that would be the only way I'd feel comfortable consuming it.
honeydew / 7488 posts
I didn't realize you could do this until recently and if I had known about it I might have considered it. But in my husband's culture you actually have to bury the placenta. So that's where both of mine are. In my yard
cantaloupe / 6800 posts
No, absolutely not. I can't see how that isn't considered cannibalistic, even if it is from your own body? Not trying to be rude, but seriously..how is that allowed?
Not for me.

@ladyfingers: Eeek placenta tacos?! Pill form might not be *that* bad, but cooked like that... yikes!!
pear / 1787 posts
@MrsTiz: This is just one placenta encapsulation specialist's take on that, via the first link I posted above:
"One misconception is that it is a form of cannibalism. This is simply untrue. Cannibalism is an evil act, not honoring human life. This does not apply to placenta consumption. The placenta is grown in order to help a baby live while in utero. When the baby is born it has completed its purpose, it is no longer a part of mother or baby. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, a major component of preparing the placenta is honor. You honor it for what it has done and treat it sacredly. This is the complete opposite of cannibalism."
pomelo / 5321 posts
It's definitely not for me. I might be okay doing it in pill form but that would be it. My hospital actually had us sign paperwork that the placenta would remain in their possession.
The thought of a placenta smoothie really grosses me out.
clementine / 961 posts
Not for me but no judgement on woman who do. I believe the benefits of eating the placenta are great but I just couldn't do it.
cantaloupe / 6923 posts
After reading blog posts from a couple of my friends and seeing the effects I will for sure be doing it. All 3 of these ladies experienced no ppd, no hair loss and no drop in milk supply. To me its too good not to be true. If that made sense lol. Anyways I will be swallowing mine and hopefully keeping my hair and not being depressed. To each their own. When I do it I am sure I won't be telling anyone besides my DH, everyone thinks it is soo weird, which I get. But I don't want to feel guilty or gross for doing it.
