It's not specifically an app, but my 12/12 kid really enjoys Reading Eggs. You can get a free 2 week trial to see if yours does too.

Thinkrolls and Thinkrolls 2. They cost money, but are fun and really help the kids use logic and reasoning.

My son is 5 now and prettt much the only thing I ever put in my phone is StoryBots.Learning. It's so awesome! Just 20-30 second cute songs about letters, colors, shapes, dinosaurs, body parts, days of the week, emotions....so it's easy to say one more and put it away and I think my son leaned a lot. It's the kind of thing we would pull out in line at a store or for the 5 minutes before food comes at dinner. My son still loves it and we started pretty early.

22 Learn has a "preschool pack" that I like. The shape/color games are probably a little basic for the older end of this age group, but used with a stylus there are some great options for tracing/fine motor practice, and the letter games are good for successful independent play (not too hard) - you can try the app for free, and I think the full purchase is only 2.99 or so!
