If you add in alllllll the snacks along with the pacing and booze that's pretty much where I'll be at.

@bpcmarj: snacks are a good idea, maybe I should make something good and filthy to go along with our anxiety watching...

I'm going to watch as late as I can, but I don't think we'll know a whole lot until at least tomorrow.

I'm not expecting to see final results tonight but I'll stay up a little later than normal. I envision a lot of swearing, pacing and Halloween candy.

I already have the bottle of wine I want picked out and on the counter! I'll stay up later than normal probably, but I don't think we'll know much till later this week unfortunately.

How is everyone coping today? Iām trying not to check for updates every 10 minutes but Iām definitely feeling anxious

Iām not even American and I got 3 hours of sleep, my husband has had CNN on since 8:30am, and Iāve already told my phone to not track my time on Twitter today.

@JennyPenny: Better than last night! Seeing what's going on in Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Nevada has changed my mood for the better. Definitely not over yet either way, though. It's funny, because I've been reading for weeks, "Don't despair on election night, we won't have a result then, it will also trend red because of absentee ballots needing to be counted" etc., but in practice it's hard!

@Anagram: Ditto. I'm so disheartened. Even if Biden wins, I just don't know how we live with ourselves knowing that half the country could vote for what Trump stands for. I'm trying to figure out how to work through my own feelings on all this and still be there for my staff, it's a real challenge today.
nectarine / 2018 posts
@Mrs. Carrot: this this this. I think there is still a chance that Biden will win (at least that's what I'm holding on to). But I can't fathom how the race was so close. How are so many people supporting Trump after the last four years? How can our country possibly move forward, no matter who wins.

@Mrs. Carrot: @catgirl: I felt this way last time around - just so shocked. I guess I feel jaded though. I'm not nearly as surprised this time around

@Mrs. Carrot: yes this ... I really wanted to believe more people didnāt support what heās about. Also sad the senate is not looking good so itāll likely be years of deadlock on meaningful change.
Iām from Michigan and while itās disappointing itāll likely be only a narrow Biden win there, Iāll still be proud they flipped back.
cantaloupe / 6086 posts
@JennyPenny: agree. In 2016 I had an upset stomach for days, I was so shocked and sad. Now all this is ānormalā

@catgirl: I felt the same way for awhile this morning. Iāll say Iām not liberal at all but I donāt like Trump and what he is doing to our institutions. But I read an article about exit polls - contrary to how it feels, people arenāt driven to vote for Trump - they are voting Republican based upon the platforms. Edited to correct that the number was 25% voted based on personality - 75% on issues. So this isnāt a referendum on Trump - that could be misleading. (Well not for 75% of the republican voters - the other 25% who like Trumps personality scare me).
What we need to do is learn (again) to talk politics civilly with people we disagree with. That doesnāt mean bashing those who voted for one candidate or another. I am hoping for a Biden presidency not because I will agree with his policies (I probably wonāt on many) because it should mean a return to civility between Americans.

@MrsJBeeG: Thank you for this. I also want a return to civility. I hope I run across the data you're referencing; I'd love to read more on it. Did it happen to mention the issues that are important to those voting for him? Wondering if it's abortion that fuels a lot of it.
clementine / 787 posts
@foodiebee: I think it was on cnnās website but I could be wrong. It was abortion, the Supreme Court. I think it stated something else as to why people voted for Trump but I donāt remember at the moment.

@MrsJBeeG: Absolutely agree with this. I think you're referencing this data: https://apnews.com/article/votecast-race-class-divide-elections-27cfbd82c14d6649097bd706f4158e4e
Most Republicans I know that voted for him think he is despicable and divisive, but they still want to vote for the platform he represents.
I personally think we've seen just as much swamp creating as draining this last presidency and was fortunate that my views have changed enough in the last 4 years to let me support most of a platform and the same candidate this year.
Let's just all hope that in the next year that we can return to platform discussions rather than candidate level mudslinging.

@codeitall: it wasnāt that article but it was definitely similar. Itās the only thing that helped me understand where we are today.
blogger / nectarine / 2043 posts
@JennyPenny: I was shocked in 2016 too but I could explain it with the anti-Clinton sentiment. Now it's an active endorsement of the awfulness of the past 4 years and I just don't know how to reconcile that.
persimmon / 1419 posts
@Mrs. Carrot: There are, unfortunately, a lot of people who have drunk the Kool-Aid and are going to reject anything that challenges the Fox News narrative and lies that spew from the president. For example I had a fervent discussion with DHās aunt who is a cancer survivor last Christmas about pre-existing conditions and the fact that the Trump administration is actively trying to overturn the ACA. She believes heās going to enact something on pre-existing conditions because ānobody wants that to go awayā and he says he has a plan. But also believes Obamacare has to go because āitās a disasterā and her premiums still go up every year.
If thereās one silver lining I feel like Clintonās loss was less gender based than I did four years ago. Which makes me hopeful that the US might someday elect a woman.
I am also really surprised by how well incumbents did overall in this garbage fire of a year. Especially Susan Collins.

@Mrs. Carrot: I feel the same way and having a bit of an existential crisis. That said, we moved to TX from NYC recently and what Iām gathering from my surroundings is that a lot of people care more about the economy than anything else (racism included) and if they listen to Fox News/ local media then they are just hearing a completely different reality.
pomelo / 5257 posts
@JennyPenny: Agreed. Not really surprised this time around, after the last four years. And to be fair, depending on how PA and GA go, it may not end up *that* close. The electoral college situation makes it seem worse (as usual). Biden would also be overcoming the typically significant incumbent advantage.
