My best friend has a 3-year-old daughter and they recently (or maybe it was last year) started the tradition of Elf on the Shelf. Her daughter LOVES the Elf and was telling me all about it when they were both over my house visiting. But then, she started asking where our elf was, and insisted on looking for it. My friend told her that while we had an elf (because apparently all households have one), it was probably moving too fast to be seen and that there was no point in looking for it. Her daughter really had trouble letting the subject drop though and really wanted to find our elf.

So... Hubs and I have zero intention of doing the Elf on the Shelf tradition with our kids, but now I'm wondering what we're going to have to say/do or not say/do with our kids and other kids so as to not ruin it for other children or have our kids be confused!

For those of your with Elves on your Shelves, how do you explain to your LOs where the elf is when you're at someone else's house? Or what happens when your LO interacts with another LO that doesn't have an Elf?

And for those of you who don't have Elves, what do you say to your LO if someone else brings up the elf to them?
