Mrs. Minch, rhymes with inch, as she would say.
We start September 3 and won’t find out who the teacher is until the first day.

We won't know who the teacher is until sometime later this month, but I will be honest, I trust the administration completely that all the teachers are top notch. Principal is very picky and since it's an IB school, the teachers are expected to be a certain caliber and the principal lets the superintendent know.
I am more curious about who the kids are that are in the class. I know a lot about some of the kids now and what's been going on in terms of behavior, so I am hyper aware.

Just got teacher assignments - I thought DD would be getting the new teacher but they moved classrooms so she is getting a different teacher - this teacher has taught 6th grade for the last 10 years - I'm a little nervous about that seeing how the age gap is huge but a friend told me that she requested to move and is super excited to teach 2nd grade - I'm hopeful it will be a good fit!
Meet and Greet is Aug 29th and school starts Sept 4th

My 2nd grade teacher was Mrs. Ayonon.
School for us starts next week on 8/14, and we find out who his teacher is the night before online. Hope this year goes well! I can't believe our kids are in 2nd grade! Time is flying by so fast.

DD’s teacher is a colleague friend of mine and goes to our church. I think it will be a great year. One of her bffs isn’t in her class anymore so we made efforts for a scheduled play date instead.
Tooth count anyone? DD lost three so far. Is that normal? It is so cuter to take group pics with her friends and they all have a missing front tooth.

@808love: I think she’s lost 6, last fall pictures were awkward.
We have meet the teacher next week and start on the 20th!!

My son has lost 5 teeth I think...two front top, two front bottom, and then one next to the front bottom.

@808love: I think there is a huge range of normal with tooth loss
DD has lost 6 but her friend has only lost 2

I think my 2nd grade teacher is Mrs. Child. I remember sitting on the bus next to her on a field trip, and she pointed out her house. I still pass it on occasion and think about her.
DS had class assignments come in the mail this week. The teacher is new to the school. His previous teachers have taught since the school opened 10 years ago, and they are amazing. Having hesitations with the new one already.
@808love: DS has lost 8 teeth. The first two came out when he turned 6, and the rest came out one after another almost a year later.

Hi all! Thats a good question, I think it was Ms Dickenson? I remember 2nd grade kinda being the first year I really have stronger memories of.
So far our 2nd grade year is going well. Her teacher is younger (3rd year teaching I think) and was just moved from 3rd grade to 2nd grade. Not sure what that means.

@808love: my son has only lost 2 so far, and he’s 7.5 now! He was a late teether, not sure that makes a difference.
We start school in one week. I have no info so far, other than the school supplies, which I still haven’t bought. I keep meaning to go through DS’s stuff from last year to see what we need to replenish, but I’m still jetlagged and swamped with a ton of work. No idea about the teacher (find out the first day) or bus schedule (any day now). I’m not worried though.

@T.H.O.U.: Nice to "see" you.
The teachers in my son's school regularly move around in the grades, I don't read too much into it. My son's teacher is the exception, she hasn't moved, but there are 2 new second grade teachers this year that were teaching different grades previously.
School starts on Thursday and I am celebrating by taking the day off with a couple of other moms.

@lamariniere: Yes I have heard that how late of a teether you were can impact when they are lost. I think she just lost number 5 last night.

DD misses her first grade teacher. Interestingly, I remember my first grade teacher but nothing about my second. No more loose teeth here and she looks like she has an overbite. I am saving up/investing for orthodontia starting next month. Other than that, DD seems happy and adjusted. Her superhero strength is writing. What is your child’s strength?
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@808love: My son's superhero strength is mental math. I wish I had to the tools to be able to compute the way he does.

Meet and Greet was last night - I mentioned before that her teacher was previously a 6th grade teacher for 10 years - I didn't love or hate her - she didn't say much - DD was being reserved and didn't talk much either. Guess we will see how the year progresses.
The kicker is she is pregnant and leaving in January - UGH!!!!
All her supplies are in her desk (that's new this year - desks!) and we are ready for school to start next Tuesday!

Hi all! We have just under a week left of vacation and are soaking up as much free play and non schedules as we possibly can! DS is starting at a new school this year and we are very excited about it and optimistic that it will be a better fit for him. We’ve been getting emails the last few weeks with all the procedures for drop off, class list, schedule etc. The kicker will be the commute via public transportation...just have to wait and see how it goes.

@Baby Boy Mom: Good luck with the transition, and enjoy the last week of vacation!
We finally got some info and my son will have a male teacher this year! I don’t know any of the teachers, but my son knows who the guy is because 1st and 2nd grade are in the same hallway, so he’s seen him around. My son will also be in class with one of his best friends, a boy who’s actually skipping a year. I don’t know whether that’s good or bad since my son can get distracted pretty easily. But at least the younger kiddo will have a friend right away. We also got the bus schedule and I’m relieved to see it’s the same time as last year, and we are still the last pickup. I still haven’t bought school supplies, but I went through all of the old stuff yesterday and kept what I could.

@Mamaof2: oh no about the mat leave! Hopefully the change won’t be too disruptive.

We are almost through week #2. So far DD has lost her 7th tooth and got a behavior note today . She has her first spelling test tomorrow (in Spanish!). And her desk was moved today for being too chatty. Thank goodness for the three day weekend, looks like she needs it.
Superhero power, reading? This kid rocks and loves it.

My husband will be the Mystery Reader for DD's class - any thoughts on what book he should read?
pineapple / 12566 posts
@Mamaof2: what’s a mystery reader?
We had meet the teacher night earlier this week, so it was the first time we got to put a face to a name. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that all of the 2nd grade teachers this year are men (4 classes)! I never had a male teacher until junior high!
Also, I missed it earlier, my son’s super power is reading! I was absolutely astounded at the reading progress he made over the summer. At the end of 1st grade, his reading was still not very fluid and he stumbled over words constantly. We made him do a lot of reading (to himself) and a summer homework book this year (little exercises disguised as games). From the first homework assignment the first week I was blown away. He reads aloud completely fluently now.

@808love: that looks cute - thanks
@lamariniere: At the beginning of the week the teacher gives a clue each day about the mystery reader and the kids have to guess which parent is coming - then on Friday the mystery person is revealed and they read to the class

@Mamaof2: I would do one of the iggy peck/ada twist/rosie revere books.

@Mamaof2: I recently found this book at the library "Who's on First" (based on the Costello and Abbott skit) and the kids thought it was hilarious. I think it's perfect for the grade 2 crowd.

I hope it's okay to join this thread? I'm learning it is a big transition from a small private school to a larger public school, and it's been a big learning experience for both my daughter and me.
Her superhero power is super confidence. I am pretty sure she didn't get it from me.

How has the first month or so been for everyone? Things seem to be going well so far, and she has bonded quickly with two girls. This is the first time she is sharing nonstop about school.
How often do you interact with the teachers? Since the parents don't go into the classroom, I've just emailed a couple of times to see how things have been. I have no idea what is the norm.
pomegranate / 3983 posts
@lamariniere: Just saw I never replied to you...Thank you it was great!
@gestalt: We are the opposite of you...switched to a smaller school. Our first month has been great! LO2 also started K, so they are together and both really loving school so far- to the point of asking on the weekend when they can go back. (Something that I never ever, ever, heard before from either one).
I try to talk to a teacher at least briefly every week or two. It's hard because they can't talk too much with everyone arriving, and because DH does most of the drop offs, so I'm just not as present as I would like. Then again, last year when LO took the bus I never got to speak to the teacher unless I emailed, so there's that.
squash / 13208 posts
@gestalt: we have been lucky and had teachers that communicate often. DD's teacher emails weekly with what they have been up to and once a month she plans on sending pictures (just got Septembers).
I have emailed a few questions and the teacher answers promptly.
pineapple / 12566 posts
@gestalt: I basically never interact in person with the teachers. Our circumstances are probably different than most people’s though. My son takes the bus to and from school every day, so I only go to school if there is a meeting. And getting to school in the afternoon is a ginormous pain (round trip = 2 hours in taxis because of heavy, unending congestion). The teacher emails at least once a week though with comments about homework or any activities. At the parent teacher night, he was very open and encouraged parents to email him with any questions. I haven’t needed to yet. I know there will be individual conferences midyear and in June and I can always request one if I need one.

Curious what kind of homework you guys are seeing. There's definitely more for us this year. For instance, the past couple of nights, DS has had:
- anywhere from 1-3 pages of math (addition or subtraction with regrouping into the hundreds place, i.e. 561-479)
- write four sentences using four of his spelling words, plus practice spelling flash cards (total of eight words)
- write three sentences in a reading journal about whatever he's reading at the time
- as always, read at least 20 mins (though this is part of our bedtime routine anyway)
His teacher says it shouldn't take more than 25 minutes, but in reality, it's been 40-50. I hope it will get faster as he gets more into the groove, but right now, it's a lot.

@Baby Boy Mom: @lamariniere: @Mamaof2: Okay, glad to know my emailing hasn't been excessive then!
@Mrs. Yoyo: No homework. She has weekly spelling words and I am the one who makes up the homework - look up the definition online, and then create a meaningful sentence. She is supposed to do a reading log but we have been pretty bad at recording her reading time. That is a lot of homework you're describing for one night though!
squash / 13208 posts
@Mrs. Yoyo: very little homework - her teacher prefers everything be completed in class. She practices her spelling words (verbally) and reads - that's it!

So, we have home learning, as the admin calls it.
It is 20 minutes of reading, 4 nights a week. Then each child is to answer a reflection question and they have a one on one conference with the teacher on a pre-assigned day. My son's conference day is Friday.
Then there is Math. They are to do 2 30 minute sessions per week, either doing online, workbooks, or attending math classes (Kumon, mathnasium). We are using Greg Tang's free downloads to cover this piece, as well as his free interactive games online.
