Oh Lord. I usually do an eye roll and make a mental note that that person will never be asked to babysit!

My MIL was talking to me about this and how much she got this when she had DH and even more when she had her triplets. She told me to tune these types of people out and how much it made her angry when people did it to her. I kid you not, 20 minutes later we were talking about DD who is 9 and about gettin her to clean her room. I told her about our new "method" of getting her to do it that works so well with her and then she cuts me off telling me what we should do and what worked with her kids. Ummm...
Weren't you just telling me how you hated how people told you to parent and also why would I try something different if what we are doing works?

@septemberlove: UGH. My mom freaked out because I told her not to put a blanket in C's crib with her. She was insisting she would be cold and needed it and I kept telling her that she has a sleepsack and fleece PJs for a reason and that babies aren't supposed to sleep with blankets until 1 year old (sh'es 9 months). She also got mad that I told her not to feed her cheesecake and sherbert.

It's so hard to smile and nod when people say stupid things! I feel your pain; I'm sorry people are not as wise as us.

I'm a big fan of stupid and cheerful in these situations, they come up SOOOO often!!

@pastemoo: Yeah I'm excited for the blanket! But I'm not buying her crib statement, especially because she said her pediatrician told her it was OK. Um, she's in her 70s. So her kid's doctor from, what, 40 years ago gave it the green light? Oh, OK then.

I think they just think that, since they parented us and we're not dead, that whatever was fine back then is still fine now and it's all just hippy dippy newfangled trendy advice these days.
