Do you have any experience with high deductible plans?
Does it make sense to be pregnant, deliver and/or have a child on such a plan?
Sorry, I know I'm being extremely vague.

We are dealing with that now. 2700 deductible... Possibly lucky for me I just found out I may have dual insurance on my parents plan that covers me until I am 26 no matter what. That deductible is only 400 but may not cover the baby, where we would be forced to go back to the other plan for them which, again, has the high deductible and thus costing us more in the end. It is an insurance mess.
Even with the super high deductible, we are saving money in the end. Sure, it is a TON of money out of pocket but 2700 is far less than what the OB and the hospital for both me and the baby will cost in the end.

We had a zero deductible with my last pregnancy and it's conveniently been raised to either $1200 or $2000 I can't remember because combined with the $4000 family deductible I was furious!!! It still beats paying out of pocket.

i would do the math if you're comparing a low-deductible plan (higher monthly premium) vs a high-deductible plan (lower monthly premium): (12 x monthly premium) + deductible. but that's assuming you get pregnant and have the baby all within the same plan year. if you have some prenatal appointments and an ultrasound late one year, and the rest of your appointments and delivery in the first half of the following year, you might end up paying close to double your deductible.

It depends on your options I think. Our deductible is 4500 but the company contributes a chunk to hsa. We got pregnant and delivered in the same year which was helpful to only have to hit the deductible once. If you have other questions I'm happy to answer but I know plans vary greatly.

My husband's insurance has a high deductible. I'm not on it, I have my own, but it's really annoying. $4000. And, he only just hit it in December for a ER visit, so now that it's 2013 already, we're gonna have to eat it again if something else comes up.
As far as your prenatal visits, most DR offices will help you work out payments to pay your deductible in payments at each visit. When I was pregnant with ds, my OB did this. They knew my deductible was going to be about $2500 for my hospital delivery, so from day one of going to them I paid like $200 or so a visit to make it not hurt so bad when I went into labor.
You could talk to the OB office you're choosing to ask if they help with this sort of thing.

@regberadaisy: I had one and switched to my husband's plan at the beginning of the year. I wish I had stuck with my high deductable plan because I ended up paying more out of pocket with his plan than I would have with mine. Feel free to message me if you want to chat more about it.

My husband has a high deductible plan, and I have a low one. The nice thing about his plan is it comes with an HSA that I can use as well, so we sock away money every month towards that, and when the baby comes, about half of our bill will be taken care of by the HSA. I know with my plan I can still pay up to 5000$ out of pocket, so it will still be a dent!
