Their stomach acid is pretty strong- hopefully it will dissolve this over time whilst simultaneously allowing water and nutrients to get through. I don't know whether a pillow case would cause a blockage. I'm so sorry this is happening, I know it's excruciating to watch. Our dog had the surgery for bowel obstruction when she was about 9 months. I won't say how much it cost because we probably live in different countries (australia) and vet costs probably vary wildly for this kind of thing. It was a lot but we had insurance and I often think about how lucky we were to have had the foresight to get insurance.

If worst comes to worst your vet might be willing to engage in a payment plan for you. I hope you don't have to go there and it resolves itself!

How stressful I am sorry. My dog hasn't had to have surgery but he has been an expensive little guy in every other area. Hoping your dog doesn't need surgery.

Haven't had abdominal surgery for any critters other than a spay done at a spay clinic (<$200) but getting a tooth removed was around $300 I think. I think most vets can work out a payment plans and/or there is some kind of no interest credit card for emergency vet bills I've heard of but can't remember the name. Just thoughts! Good luck!! My friend's dad is a vet and we were just talking about how common (and expensive) this surgery is! I hope it passes easily!

Pet surgery is expensive. We paid $1,000 just today to have her ear examined and cleaned out. We have medical bills from my c-section on top of that, but there's no question that we would do this for her. Our dog is part of the family.

My dog ate lots of socks!! All of a sudden she started vomiting her food. She threw up one sock, so I thought it was done. She kept vomiting and we took her in. Moral of the story, they gave her an IV and lots of laxatives. She passed all of them. We were prepared for surgery, but luckily it worked out. If your dog shows any sign of distress, of course go to the vet! The IV and laxatives were much cheaper than surgery

Luckily we have never needed surgery and our dog has never eaten that large of a volume at one time but she's eaten quite a few of my and lo's shoes and the leather comes out through one direction or the other within about a day. Good luck!

@littlejoy: Our dog had 1/3 of his lung removed due to a mass they found when he kept getting sick last year. Very luckily it wasn't a tumor, but it took months of diagnostics before the procedure, and we almost lost him on the operating table. It was incredibly traumatic (and expensive-SO expensive), and we decided that we won't put him through any sort of experience like that again. We have our fingers crossed that since he recovered so beautifully he'll still have many years with us, but we just appreciate every day we have with him. I'd say that you need to take the dog's age into consideration in addition to the predicted recovery times, costs, etc. I'm hoping your pup is okay!

@littlejoy: oh man. I hope your pup will pass it naturally! There is a credit plan called care credit I think that can be used towards vet costs that is interest free. I used it towards my wisdom teeth removal. You can also call other vets in your area for a estimate. Good luck.

My cat ate a TON of elastic when he was 2. elastic bands, rubber bracelets, elastic string from cat toys. He needed emergency surgery and everything turned out fine. Although we are hyper aware of anything with elastic now!

When we went through with the surgery, I had a lot of worries about success. The Vet told me that they see animals eat SO MANY things. It's a pretty common problem and usually repairable.
