Is it important to you that you have a son to carry on the family name? My dh is the only one to carry on our last name. He has all female cousins who have married and taken their husband's last name. He'd like to have a son so the name doesn't die out.

Not really. My family name is so ingrained into me, I feel like I'll always be a Maidenname no matter what. I hope our daughter(s) will feel the same way. DH doesn't care either! lol!

No DH is one of three sons, and his father has a few brothers.

No, having a son to carry on the family name wasn't important to us, especially since E has 4 male cousins so we're not worried about the name dying out. It was important to DH that we pass on his middle name, though (Evans). It's also FIL's middle name, and was FIL's mother's maiden name. We likely would have used it as a middle name if we'd had a girl.

But, my dad was the only boy of his generation and my brother his only son, so we did all sort of hope that he would have a boy, especially since at first he wasn't sure if he would ever had kids, then when he got married, they planned to be one and done. So, it was nice that he had a son, but really, it's not like we are royalty, and we have a very common last name, just no other men in our direct family.

I would have cared more about carrying on my maiden name. In DH's culture, there is no "carrying on the family name", because there is no family name. Kids/spouses generally take the dad/husband's FIRST name as their last name.
So, let's say DH's dad's name was James Smith. Dh's name would be DH James. His kids would be kids-name DH.
But DH has been corrupted by American/western culture (lol), so suddenly he wanted LO to have his last name, for some reason.--lol

We feel very blessed to have our DS! But we definitely want a baby girl someday.

No. Their name was shortened when his family came to the us so its not even their original name.

Well, DH has a brother who has a son, plus there are lots of cousins with the last name, so there wasn't a worry of HIS name dying out. However, my maiden name dies out with my generation, which is why we are giving it to LO as her middle name. It was very important to me to pass it on.

It is not terribly important to DH....he is 1 of 8, his father was 1 of 8, etc etc so there are plenty of others to carry on the family name! He would like to name a child after his deceased father, though, which I think is fine...though it would have to be a middle name, since a son would probably be teased mercilessly if he had the same first name (Angel).

My husband really wants a son. He is a "third" and would love for there to be a "fourth."
However, because of our genetic issues, if none of the male embryos are seen as strong enough to implant, he would be ok with having daughters.

I didn't change my name and I presume our girls won't change theirs, so our names live on!

I have two make cousins that (hopefully) will one day settle down and carry on my maiden name. If we don't have a son, our last name dies. FIL was an only child.
