I'm sorry but this.... this really disgusts me. $100 million dollars and they approached a lawyer within the first WEEK after the shooting.
Thoughts?

Wow! That's not only incredibly soon after such a tragedy but totally an unreasonable amount!
I could understand some suing for the ptsd & other emotional harm that their child has from the experience but $100 million? Please.... that's just ridiculous and not for the child's benefit at all. =/

I think there are legitimate concerns. Eventually, the tragedy will fade from our minds and there won't be support and money coming through. These kids may have many medical bills to deal with what they need to. I think that it wasn't handled well and a 100 million is more than what is truly deserved.

Pathetic. And their kid wasn't even in one of the affected classrooms... they're suing because she heard screaming and shooting over the intercom.

@runsyellowlites: I agree. I can totally see making the school or Dept of Edu pay for counseling but $100mil? I think the part of this that really gets me is that they did this immediately after the shooting. They didn't even wait for the dust to settle before they had $$ in their eyes.
The other thing... they are suing because the school didn't protect their kid from "forseeable harm". How the heck is what happened "forseeable"?

Disgusting. Instead of suing they should be hugging their child every day that is still here. There are 20 sets of parents that would trade places in a heartbeat.

God forbid you just be grateful you have your child alive in your arms.
I can understand suing for the cost of therapy, but I imagine the state or someone will be offering that for free already. This...this is just gross.

This is a lawsuit against the state? Any chance that the family is suing in order to force the state to make changes regarding gun control or some other way to protect children/schools? I just hate to think that this is a family that decided to make a profit out of a tragedy. I know such people exist, but....

Ugh...people are unbelievable. It's pretty obvious that the parents are suing for the money. $100 million is excessive and, like @Shutterbug said, the kid only heard yelling over the intercom. If anything, the parents who lost children and the children who lost their siblings should be suing. Those are the children who desperately need therapy.

Can't they just be grateful that their child is ALIVE?! Disgusting.

I'm appalled. I'm pretty sure there are 26 families out there that would PAY $100 million to have one more day with their family member.....and then we have people out there looking to make money in any way possible. Disgusting.
I think every person involved with Sandy Hook will need some form of counseling at some stage, and I hope the state provides it, but suing is not the answer. This just makes me feel all icky and gross.

Wow. This is pathetic. Their child wasn't harmed and how is that the school's fault? 100 million is absurd

I could understand them wanting money/psychological support but $100 million? Disgusting.

@Grace: This is a civil tort claim against some state entities for emotional distress. It's a money grab, not a political statement about gun control. If the plaintiffs here had a political agenda, they would be lobbying the Conn. legislature, not suing.

Disgusting. I hope negative public pressure forces them drop the case.

The amount of money isn't really that big of a deal. You can sue people for whatever you like; has nothing to do with whether you will collect or not, or what you would actually collect.
When you file a suit like this, under the pretense (whether justified or not) that action wasn't taken that could have been taken and you are looking for changes to existing policies, the point is to ask for enough compensation that the organization has to be forced to change the way it operates. If you sue a multimillion dollar company for $500k, it's cheaper to pay out and go about their business. If you sue them (and win) for 100M; you get changes. So, it's actually not necessary a "money grab".
I do think changes need to be made to school security at every school across the board.
