My LO is such a light sleeper so we're going to try some white noise for her. My question is... do we really need to get a sound machine for the white noise? Or do you think a fan would do the job?
Benefits of one over the other?

We used a fan for about a year. Worked super well until it died on us. It did make the room a lot cooler in the winter though..
We have a sound machine and I LOVE it!
It's small so when we travel it comes with us. I would go with the sound machine. The Bees recommended this one and I love it!

I'd suggest neither....we just use an iPod and iPod dock and made a playlist with the same white noise track over and over (and over and over - like 50 times of a 15 minute track form the Happiest Baby on the Block white noise CD - rain on the roof track). Cheaper (if you already have both at home) and more useful in the long run, plus you can put the playlist on your phone or any other iPod and its portable when you're not at home.
Also, if you get a machine, make sure to find one that will play all night if you need it to - we had the Sleep Sheep but it turns off after 45 minutes, so when our son would wake up past those 45 mins, there would be no white noise to help lull him back to sleep.

@FriedBabyMama: We have the sleep sheep too, and I'm having the same problem with it. I might try the iPod idea - thanks!

I think a fan will work, but I really love our sound machine! It's small, portable & has so many different options & combos you can use.

I use my Droid, and just plug into the charger in DS's room. I use the Relax and Sleep app.
We used a humidifier with DD, and that worked fine for over a year and a half. I don't think it's necessary to buy something specific just for white noise; you can just use whatever you already have in the house (radio set on static, humidifier, fan, even a cheap blow dryer).

We have the same white noise machine as @chopsuey119: thanks to the Bees! It is a must have in our house. We used to use the CloudB Sleep Giraffe but had the same issue with it cutting off after 45 minutes. Fans were never loud enough for our LO.

I read that air circulation is good for SIDS so we got a fan, which also does the job of white noise.
