So ButterflyIQ is at the Consumer Electronics Show now marketing a personal hand-held ultrasound for at home use by non-medical people. I know the price point for the medical version of this is ~$2000 which is a drastic decrease from what prices used to be. Curious if people would consider saving to buy one.

@yellowbeach: If I had the 2 grand in pocket, I would buy that home u/s machine in a nanosecond... My DH would not be so enthused with my purchase.

I know two women who lost their babies 38 weeks+. They were fine at one appointment, the baby was gone at the next. It’s a lot of money, but it does tempt me. For one thing, you could probably sell it and get a lot of your money back.

@Hypatia: seems like there’s a good secondary market for rentals. Kind of like breast pumps. Hmm 🤔 maybe this will be how I pay off my student loans and let other women get some peace of mind for much less cash than $2K. Would you want to have it for the whole pregnancy or just towards the end?

No way! I mean for me personally I don’t know how to decipher ultrasounds so I think it would create more anxiety regarding the health of the baby.

No way. I'm not sure how good a constant ultrasound waves would be for me or the baby (you can chime in since you are an MD.) To be honest, half the time at ultrasounds I can't really tell what I'm looking at to begin with so if I couldn't' find the heartbeat or an arm or something I'd be way too worried. I'll leave it to the pros.

@Lindsay05: Agreed, I don't really see why, as a layperson not trained in reading ultrasounds, I would even want this over a less expensive doppler. I'm not sure I could decipher enough to make it worth the cost vs. just hearing the heartbeat for reassurance! (though I don't have a doppler either...but theoretically, haha).

I had a really hard time telling what I was looking at with ultrasounds, as I don't have any training on how to interpret them. I'd rather just use a doppler if I needed reassurance, which is very straightforward.

@psw27: same. I’d be worried about the extra ultrasound waves plus it would just make me crazier. Plus I had two very active babies so could feel them moving most of the time after a certain point anyway.
But I had two straightforward, uncomplicated pregnancies. I couldnt say how I would feel if I had reason to be worried.

Sure! If my husband would go for it (unlikely) and if it was straightforward to use. Maybe if there was a rental option like there is for Dopplers. I got a Doppler for my second pregnancy and it was the best.
ETA: I’d only want it for before you can feel the baby move which is how long I use the Doppler for. So after 15 weeks I’m good without either and just visiting my doctor for regular appointments.

No! Ultrasounds aren’t necessary. A friend of mine insisted on one every appointment because she wanted to see her baby. I was fine with the 3 or 4 that I had spaced out throughout the entire pregnancy and one of those times was at the specialist’s office because of a skipped heartbeat.

Update: DH and I bought one for work (we are both doctors). Maybe one day I’ll have a reason for personal use. (Still waiting for my 
). In the meantime, at least I know I don’t have any gallstones!
