Has anyone ever done family photos in fancy clothes? Like a log dress for me and a tux for DH - same for kids -
We usually do the "fall clothes' theme but thought this might be a fun change!

I've never done it but I kind of don't see the point of it. I can't imagine trying to wrestle kids into a tux and get them to do formal poses, and it would seem so foreign to who we are as a family - I don't see the point in memorializing something that we would never actually do.

Yes; we did formal shots (rented a dress from Rent the Runway and my husband wore a tux) last year at Christmas and we've done formal shots of just LO in the past. They came out AWESOME. LO was excited to wear a "princess dress" (formal gown, she didn't like wear a costume or anything) and the shots look really natural - - just fancyish clothing.

We haven't done it, but I think it would be fun. I'm always fascinated by contrasts, so I would love to do fancy formal clothes, but out in a park or a field and do more relaxed, lifestyle type shots.

We haven't done it yet but are planning to in a few years when dd is older. I think you should do it, they look so nice and it'll be a fun experience.
Growing up, this is how we did our family photos, it's very much my mom's style. I remember it was always fun to get so dressed up and see my mom wear her furs and jewels (she'd wear fur coats to the pictures in the winter, not in the actual photo) and when I look at the pictures now when I go to my parents' house it's nice to see and remember and special, that's what I want for my kids.

As a photographer myself, I would say that sounds way too formal. But, it also depends on setting. It might look really cool if you were in a big city. But, I think it might just look a little stiff and unnatural. I’d recommend something more along these lines for wardrobe.

@CatchAFallingStar: Thanks for those pictures - that would totally work - not too fancy but not too casual either
They are being taken at a local castle

I think it sounds super fun and the castle backdrop would be gorgeous! Be sure to post afterwards!

@Mamaof2: do it!! there are two mamas on here that have done it (I don't think they're active on here anymore) and it was amazing! one was a beach and the other was forest. Gorgeous

We did 10 year anniversary photos at a winery I wore a long sleeved full length lace gown borrowed by my original wedding dress designer, DH wore a suit and tie, DD wore a frilly dress from J&J but refused to wear her floral crown. I had a bouquet and hair and makeup done. I’m a pro photographer and hired a regional film photographer. They were pretty formal but I love them. It was like having DD at our wedding. We used them for Christmas card.
I dig this concept. At a castle casual clothes would not be quite right. Go big and enjoy. I’d love to shoot a session like this. Also your kids are the right age. I don’t recommend this with kids the age of DD at the time (18 months) since she was uncooperative at times. But it was our 10 year so I did not want to wait.
