You should go to a local running store and have them assess you for the right type of shoe. A shoe that works for one person may be terrible for another. It all depends on your arch, foot width, gait, etc. People at a local running store will check out your feet, watch you jog a little bit, and help you determine what type of support you need.

Now, if you don't have a big budget, what I have done is gone and gotten assessed, tried on a few shoes they recommended for me, and then told them I'd think about it. I went home and searched online for a better deal for the shoes I had liked at the store. I was able to find the same shoe I loved, but an older model, on major clearance.

I love my Nike frees, but they're so expensive.

Def go to a running store & have them help you. They'll have you run & check out your feet in a few pairs, sooooo worth it! My favorites weren't the most $$, they're asics. I have a normal height arch, but it's too flexible so it flattens when I run, my feet also get crazy hot so I like something that feels like my feet can breathe.

@MrsBrewer: I usually get blisters the first few times I run in a new pair of shoes because I wear Asics and they come up a bit high in the back and that part is stiff. But if you're getting blisters because the fit is wrong, then you are not being dramatic.

@MrsBrewer: Yeah, that's why you need to get assessed, to make sure the fit is right. It might be an issue of the heel or toe box on that particular shoe being too tight or too wide. I really, highly recommend going to a running specific store!

@MrsBrewer: Brand doesn't make a huge difference as long as the fit is right. A dedicated running store won't usually carry a no-name or "off" brand anyway! Your basics will be Nikes, Asics, New Balance, Brooks, Saucony, Adidas, and possibly Reeboks. (Reeboks are the only brand I'd shy away from.)

@MrsBrewer: I go to a running store before every pair of new runners to have a gait assessment done and never buy from them, not to worry, I am sure they are used to it. I do however pretend to be interested, lol.

I used to be a New Balance wearer, now I usually split between Saucony & Asics. I have Under Armour runners that are my everyday shoes that I would burn before I would run in them, lol.

I won't get into pricing as I'm in Canada, and naturally our equivalent stuff is going to cost more :S

@MrsBrewer: I'm not going to lie, when I first started running, having more expensive shoes (they were about $100) shamed me into running until it was a habit. It's like they were judging me if I didn't go and run in them.
