How did you find your babysitter/nanny? I'm considering using something like Care.com, but I'm intimidated 1)by cost and 2)by having to sort through a lot of people. What have your childcare-finding experiences been and any tips on finding a good person? Thanks!

Our favorite sitter is our neighbors daughter. You can try the baked goods thing to meet a few neighbors and some of them may have kids the right age.
Also ask your hair stylist and others you interact with who live in the area. We have a sitter who's also sits for my stylist.

We used a nanny agency and a lot of word of mouth from friends and family. I'm also in Facebook mommy groups and people are constantly posting about nannies looking for work as their kids start school.

Does your neighborhood have a Facebook or Nextdoor group? Posting there might stir up some candidates.
I also was able to post listings on a digital job board at a local university. (This might not work if you need someone full time, but is where we found someone for a few afternoons a week.)

We found our part time nanny on a job board at a local nursing school. We also got a good candidate from care.com (6 years ago so not sure what has changed). I think we pared down the candidates pretty easily and just talked to a few.

Care.com helped us find a great nanny. I will say be wary of college students who nanny part time. I’ve found them to be unreliable.

I had a good experience with care.com. Our babysitter is an elementary school teacher who likes to babysit on the side. I felt really good with her background and references. And I only needed to pay the fee for one month to find her, then I cancelled.

If your older one goes to preschool, try asking there, I read before that some teachers often babysit on the side too.

I hired the young classroom assistant teachers at my son's daycare. They are wonderful and already know him.

I have had great results from posting on my local University's Nursing School board. I emailed the assistant to the Dean and figured out the best way to post, and got so many great candidates. Now, 3 years in, we still use some of the same sitters, and every Fall/Spring I post again and add 1 or 2 more to our rotation.
